McLaughlin nets 33, Oilers net victory

Brandon McLaughlin scored a game-high 33 points as Huntington Beach
opened play Monday in the La Quinta Tournament with a 73-56 victory
over Laguna Beach.
The Oilers (2-0) pulled away from Laguna in the second half,
outscoring the Breakers, 34-24.
In addition to McLaughlin, other double-figure scorers for
Huntington included Denis Abando with 15 points and Brandon O’Bryan
with 11.
Abando connected on three, three-point shots and O’Bryan hit two
three-point baskets.
In nonleague play, Huntington Beach opened its season by edging
visiting Aliso Niguel, 54-53. McLaughlin led all scorers with 23
points and Abando hit three, three-point shots en route to 15 points.
Also Monday at the La Quinta Tournament, Edison downed Irvine,
66-53. T.J. Lipold paced the Chargers with 17 points, Jeff Golden had
15 points and Kevin Reed scored 11.
The Chargers hit 10, three-point baskets, with Golden getting his
15 points on five, three-point shots. Reed hit a trio of three-point
shots.
Marina launched its season Monday with a 62-55 victory over La
Serna in the opening round of the Fullerton Tournament.
Senior forward Matt Brennan was Marina’s top scorer with 20
points, junior forward Jeff DeLaunay and senior post James Lambert
each scored 17 points and senior guard Steve Becker had nine assists.
Ocean View returned home last weekend after playing at the Lone
Star Invitational in San Antonio. The Seahawks fell to Dominguez of
Compton in the consolation championship game, 72-58.
The Seahawks’ Matt Sargeant scored 29 points to lead all scorers,
and teammate Greg Okwudibonye finished with 15 points.
In earlier tournament play, Ocean View routed Lanier of San
Antonio, 89-49, behind Sargeant’s 18 points, 16 by Okwudibonye and 12
each by Clint Amberry and Brad Sweezy.
In girls’ basketball action Monday, Ocean View was a 61-15
nonleague winner over host Sage Hill in its season opener. Vanessa
Alderfer led the Seahawks with 19 points, Ahkiah Hunter scored 12 and
Leila Abufarie scored 10.
Edison reached the title game of the Lady Centurion Classic at
Century High where it fell to El Dorado, 60-47.
Valerie Katayama led the Chargers with 19 points and Eva Camarena
finished with 13.
Edison earlier had ripped Dana Hills, 63-19, in tournament play,
getting 15 points from Jessica Harris and 13 more from Camarena.
The Chargers also dumped Northwood, 58-40, with Camarena scoring
15 points and Elysse Van Leer and Wahine Kepilino each scoring 11.
Edison opened its season and the Lady Centurion Classic with a
68-30 victory over Santa Ana Valley. Camarena led the way with 25
points and Kepilino and Audra Tamulaitis each scored 11.
In the tournament’s fifth-place game, Huntington Beach fell in
double overtime to Santa Ana Valley, 51-50. Katia Hadj-Hamou led all
scorers with 28 points.
Hadj-Hamou also led the Oilers with 13 points in a 35-34
tournament loss to Irvine, and scored 15 more in a 31-29 win over
host Century in pool play.
Marina dropped it season opener to Pacifica, 49-44, in a
first-round game at the Woodbridge Tournament. Allison Budzinski led
the Vikings with 13 points.
In girls’ soccer, Huntington was a 5-0 winner over Rancho Alamitos
at the Ocean view tournament.
In other tournament games involving local schools, host Ocean View
fought Lakewood to a scoreless tie and Kennedy edged Marina, 3-2.
In nonleague play, Edison got two goals from Brianne Wahrenbrock
and five saves from Kelsey Bowman in a 2-0 win over San Clemente.
The Chargers also defeated Newport Harbor, 4-0. Wahrenbrock scored
three goals and Amanda Draeger scored once in the win.
In boys’ soccer, Edison blanked Northwood, 1-0, Huntington Beach
shut out Newport Harbor, 4-0, and Marina fell to Estancia, 1-0.
In boys’ water polo, Marina’s Jon Beckman and Huntington’s Nick
Sullivan played for the South Sunday at the 18th annual Orange County
All-Star match.
The North defeated the South, 8-4, at the Joint Forces Training
Base in Los Alamitos.
