Edison runs past Eagles

* SOCCER: The Estancia High boys soccer team couldn’t hold a 2-0

halftime lead and dropped a 5-2 nonleague decision to visiting Edison

Wednesday.

“We just quit. It was a total letdown on our part,” Estancia Coach

Steve Crenshaw said. “We thought we had the game won after the first

two goals.”

Jose Luis Garcia put Estancia up, 1-0, in the fifth minute when he

took control and then sent the ball over the Edison goalkeeper’s

head. Noe Martinez’s shot from 20 yards out found the back of the net

in the 18th minute. Ed Cholakian led Edison with two goals. Estancia

faces host La Costa Canyon at 3 p.m. Friday in a nonleague game.

Sage blitzed by Bishop’s

* BASKETBALL: Senior shooting guard Kevin Joyce scored a game-high

18 points, but it was not enough as Sage Hill lost its opener in the

San Diego Small Schools tournament, 56-36, to the Bishop’s Wednesday

at Santa Fe Christian High.

The Bishop’s (1-0) smothered Sage Hill (2-2) from the outset and

held the Lightning to no points in the second quarter en route to

building a 33-10 halftime lead.

“They blitzed us in the first half,” Sage Hill Coach Steve Keith

said. “They were in every passing lane and we had a hard time getting

off shots.”

Matt Loper tallied 10 points while Mike Voge scored four followed

by two each from Tim Wilkins and Tyler Derheim.

Sage continues tournament action at 4:30 p.m. today against

Army-Navy.

in the 60th minute when Matt Tracy’s cross found Joel Walker, who

sent the ball of the post and into the net from six yards out.

Newport goalkeeper Taylor Carver made five saves and Warren

Junowich marked opponents constantly, Newport Coach Ryan Hernandez

said.

Tracy, Walker, Carver and Junowich are all seniors. The Sailors
