CdM boys under-11 team finishes third in Harvest Cup tourney

Corona del Mar’s Select boys under-11 AYSO Region 57 soccer team

placed third in the 440-team Nike Harvest Cup tournament held Friday

through Monday at sites throughout Irvine.

CdM defeated West Covina, 3-0, in its first game with Brennan

Anderson scoring two goals to go with one by Brent Lawson.

Anderson rebounded a Kjell Wolker shot and sent the ball past the

goaltender for his first goal. Jack Gorab assisted on Anderson’s

second goal.

Brent Gray passed to Lawson, who outran a Covina defenseman and

faked the goalkeeper to tally the final goal.

CdM posted its 11th shutout of the season with a defense led by

Nick Curci, Gray and goalkeeper Clark Cashion.

CdM then defeated Diamond Bar, 3-0, with Mason Case, Lawson and

Taylor Ross each scoring goals.

Case scored off a Blake Thomsen assist with Lawson tallying his

goal on a rebound from a shot by Ross. A corner kick from Case

allowed Ross to use his left foot to boot the ball past the

goalkeeper for the third goal.

Grant Garrett and Will Morrow led the defensive effort in front of

Cashion.

The Irvine Strikers knocked CdM out of the tournament with a 3-1

victory in the semifinals.

Lawson scored his third goal of the tournament when he took a Mike

Pawell pass to knock it in from 10 yards.

Hector Marino paced numerous CdM attacks while Gray, Curci, Morrow

and Cashion helped stop numerous offensive onslaughts.

In Region 120 girls under-12 play:

* Costa Mesa Blaze 4, CdM 0:

Shay Goldberg, Justine Cathey, Jeana de Arakal and Allyson Wallace

all found the back of the net for the Blaze (7-2-1) in the regular

season finale. Kendra Fisher provided assists.

CdM (4-4-2) was kept to its side of the field most of the game by

solid defense from Misha Brown, Erin Rodman, Megan Henderson, Karen

Villalba, Jenny Johnston, Natalie Seckel and Amanda Watson.

Goalkeepers Shona Lamb and Amy Ramirez led the Blaze’s

league-leading defense, which allowed six goals in 10 games.

Blaze will begin Area Q playoffs Dec. 13.
