The run through the CIF Southern Section doubles tournament for two
Newport Harbor High girls tennis duos ended Thursday in the Round of
16 at SeaCliff Country Club.
Seniors Bonnie Adams and Vanessa Dunlap, the Sea View League
doubles champions, valiantly fought through two tiebreakers in the
final two sets but lost to Jane Huh and Ashley Alger from
Marlborough, 0-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5).
Adams and Dunlap led both the second and third sets, 5-4, and were
serving for the match each time.
The Newport tandem won four straight games to earn a 5-4 lead in
the third set and needed to break serve to force a tiebreaker.
“The Marlborough team was too tough,” Newport Coach Fletcher Olson
said. “I don’t think [Adams and Dunlap] made two errors in that first
set.”
Their Newport teammates Diana Khoury and A.J. Olson, whom Dunlap
and Adams defeated for the league title, lost to the top-seeded duo
of Cheyenne and Katrina Reveche of Campbell Hall, 6-1, 6-2, in Round of 16 action Thursday.
The four helped lead the Sailors to a share of the league
championship with Woodbridge and to the second round of the CIF
Division I playoffs.
