The 2003-04 prep basketball season gets underway this week with
nonleague and tournament competitions throughout the county.
Below are a few more previews for the local schools:
BOYS
School: Marina
League: Sunset
Head Coach/Year: Roger Holmes (10th)
Assistant Coaches: Andy Meyer, Eric Edmunds, Dean Yoshiyama
League Record/Finish: 7-3 (First)
2003 CIF Playoff Results: Defeated Santa Ana Valley, lost to
Capistrano Valley in Division IA playoffs.
Returning Starters: James Lambert (6-3, guard, Sr., 19 ppg., 7.5
reb.); Matt Brennan (6-3, forward, senior, 15 ppg., 5 reb.); Stephen
Becker (guard, 6-0, Sr., 8 ppg., 6.5 assists); Matt Lee (6-5,
center).
All-League Returners: James Lambert, Sunset MVP; Matt Brennan,
Sunset MVP; Stephen Becker, second-team all-league.
Returning Lettermen: Jeff Rivera, Matt Molino.
Newcomers: Jeff DeLaunay; Aren Baghdassarian; Blake Overend;
Brandon Brown; Jeff Holliday; Casey Becker.
What to Expect: “This an experienced group with five players in
their third year of varsity competition, and Lambert entering his
fourth,” coach Roger Holmes said. “We will have to make up for the
loss of three, key seniors from last year’s team.”
Team’s Strengths: “Speed and quickness,” Holmes said. “This a
group that never gets tired and can run all day.”
Keys to Success: “Finding ways to make up for the incredible
hustle and effort of last year’s seniors,” Holmes said.
Season Opener: Monday , at Fullerton Tournament.

Head Coach/Year: Rich Boyce (fourth)
Assistant Coaches: Dave White, Phil Guite
2002-03 Overall Record: 16-11
League Record/Finish: 3-6 (fifth)
CIF Playoff Results: lost to Foothill in first-round of IIAA
playoffs.

What to Expect: “We will play very hard and aggressive,” coach
Rich Boyce said.
Team’s Strengths: “Shooting and hustle,” Boyce said.
Keys to Success: “If we shoot well, we will be in games,” Boyce
said.

GIRLS

in Division IIAA playoffs.
Returning Starters: Rebecca Kepilino, 5-11, guard/forward, Jr.,
16.3 ppg.; Valerie Katayama, 5-7, guard, Sr., 11.4 ppg.; Eva
Camarena, 5-7, guard, Sr., 11.2 ppg.; Jessica Harris, 5-9, guard,
forward, Sr., 4 ppg.
All-League Returners: Rebecca Kepilino, league MVP; Valerie
Katayama, first-team all-league.
Top Newcomers: Elysse Van Leer, guard, Soph.; Audra Tamulaitis,
guard, Fr.; Wahine Kepilino, guard, Fr.
What to Expect: “We are a quicker team this year and we still
should be solid defensively,” coach Corey Kelly said. “We lost a
little size and strength from last year’s team, but we hope our hard
work and quickness will overcome that.”
Team’s Strengths: “Our team’s strength should be solid leadership
from our returners. We should also be a difficult team to play with
our strong defense.”
Key’s to Success: “If Camarena, Harris, Katayama and Rebecca
Kepilino can provide solid leadership and stay healthy, we should
have a fun year. Our hard work and defense should overcome our lack
of height.”

All-League Returners: Rachael Maulit, first-team all-league and
Marina’s MVP in 2002-03.

Top Newcomers: Lindsey Schulze, guard, Soph.; Marleina Guadignini,

What to Expect: “We are extremely young both in age and varsity
experience,” coach Butch Fredlow said. “We will compete every night
and play an up-tempo style of basketball, trying to compete in the
tough Sunset League. This is a team with four sophomores, two
freshmen, four juniors and three seniors. It is a great group to be
around and our sophomores and freshmen are really setting the
foundation for the program.”
Team’s Strengths: “This is really a tight group of girls who play
for themselves as much as play for each other.”
Key’s to Success: “Defense and tempo will be the key factors for
us.”
