Mesa wins season opener

Costa Mesa High sophomore Scott Knox scored a career-high 28 points
as the Mustangs prevailed in their boys basketball season opener
Monday, 62-37, over nonleague foe Serra.
Knox, a starter last season as a freshman, twice scored 21 points
in a game. He connected on four three-pointers in his first game this
season.
Junior Jeff Waldron added 11 points and 12 rebounds, while
sophomore point guard Brian Molina added six points and seven
assists.
The Mustangs (1-0) won’t return to action until the Valley
Christian tournament begins next week.

Sage Hill victorious
* BASKETBALL: Kevin Joyce scored 19 points and grabbed nine
rebounds as Sage Hill School overcame a six-point halftime deficit to
post a 50-45 nonleague boys basketball victory at Orangewood Academy
in Garden Grove in their season opener Monday.
Sage Hill had difficulty against Orangewood’s two-three zone over
the first two quarters, scoring just 16 points. But the Lightning
matched that total in the third quarter and took the lead for good
with an 18-point outburst in the fourth quarter.
“We haven’t spent much time [working against a zone],” Sage Hill
Coach Steve Keith said. “We just kind of grew into the game.”
Matt Loper added 15 points, five assists and five steals for the
Lightning.

CdM defeats Cypress
* SOCCER: Dominic Rubino broke a scoreless tie 15 minutes into the
second half when he dribbled around two Cypress defenders and pounded
home a goal that helped lift the Corona del Mar High boys soccer team
to a 2-0 nonleague road victory Monday.
Chris Ringstrom added a second goal for the Sea Kings (1-0),
scoring off an assist from Julien Cerutti, while central defender
Shane Collins and goalkeeper Jay Zimmerman, who had five saves,
prevented Cypress from getting on the scoreboard.
Corona del Mar will return to the pitch on Wednesday at Santa Ana
Valley.
Sailors start with win
* SOCCER: Joel Walker scored on a 25-yard free kick late in the
second half to break a 2-2 tie and lead Newport Harbor High’s boys
soccer team to a 4-2 nonleague victory over Estancia in the season
opener for both schools.
Walker, who had two goals for the Sailors, knocked his free kick
over Estancia’s wall of defenders and beat the Eagles’ keeper for his
second goal of the game.
Adam Pinkerton added a late goal, while Matt Tracy knocked home a
free kick from 35 yards out in the first half. Taylor Carver made six
saves in goal for Newport.
Luis Mendoza scored both goals for Estancia. Uber Gallegos and
Juan Castaneda shared time in goal, each making four saves.
Lightning strikes in OT
* WATER POLO: Sage Hill School senior Hayden Hutchison scored with
two minutes remaining to tie the game, then added an assist in sudden
death for a 9-8 girls water polo win over Magnolia in the first round
of pool play of the Magnolia tournament Monday.
In the overtime period, Hutchison assisted on a counterattack goal
by sophomore Stephanie Roeser in the first minute to give the
Lightning the victory.
Hutchison paced the Lightning with four goals, while Roeser added
three.
The Lightning overcame a 6-2 deficit and outscored the Sentinels,
4-0, after three quarters.
Sage plays Rancho Alamitos today in a nonleague game, then returns
to tournament action Friday against North of Riverside.

Mesa opens with loss
* SOCCER: Fountain Valley High’s Matt Brummett scored a hat trick
as the Barons scored all their goals in the final 20 minutes to post
a 6-0 victory over Costa Mesa in the nonleague season opener.
The Mustangs’ lone goal came on a free kick by Luis Villanueva
from just beyond the penalty area.
Willmer Hernandez made four saves for Mesa, which also received
strong play from center midfielder Demetrio Velasquez.
The Mustangs return to action Friday, at home, against Cerritos.
Monarchs top CdM
* SOCCER: Corona del Mar High sophomore Taylor Fallon scored on an
indirect free kick in the 72nd minute to pull the host Sea Kings
within 2-1, but Mater Dei pulled away for a 4-1 season-opening nonleague girls soccer victory Monday.
CdM Coach Bryan Middleton praised the two-way play of junior
midfielder Tanisha Senaratne and he estimated junior goalkeeper Katie
Schiesser made nine saves.
The Sea Kings return to action Thursday at Dana Hills.
Sage Hill drops opener
* SOCCER: Saddleback Valley Christian High scored a pair of
second-half goals to defeat Sage Hill, 2-0, in the Lightning’s
nonleague season opener.
Laura Gordon made 14 saves for the Lightning, while freshman Emily
Webb played strong defense at the sweeper position.
