Warnings pulled from part of beaches
About half the number of warning signs that were posted Sunday on
local beaches warning the public about high levels of bacteria in the
water were taken out on Tuesday, Newport Beach Lifeguard Lt. Boyd
Mickley said.
Health officials had instructed lifeguards to post the signs along
the coast late Sunday morning after they got back results of water
quality tests. The heightened level of bacteria was probably caused
by a sudden change in tide patterns, health officials said.
On Tuesday, lifeguards pulled out signs from all beaches from 28th
Street all the way to the Santa Ana River mouth, Mickley said.
He said they had posted about 200 signs on Sunday. These warnings
are required by state standards.
