Two-minute drill
* Newport Harbor’s first-round exit from the CIF Southern Section
playoffs means no Newport-Mesa school advanced to the quarterfinals
for the second consecutive season.
* Heavy traffic on Friday caused the Sailors to arrive just a
half-hour prior to the 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Newport Harbor quickly went
through its pregame drills, then huddled in the corner of the stadium
prior to the start of the game. Kickoff was delayed 10 minutes with
the game beginning at 7:40.
* The traffic also affected others involved with the football
program. The band and cheerleaders didn’t arrive until the teams were
lined up to begin the game and most of the Sailors’ fan base was late
arriving, meaning they missed the opening kickoff, which was returned
89 yards for a touchdown by Los Altos.
* Los Altos proved a physical opponent, knocking a number of
Sailors out of the game at various points.
Senior end Peter Hoyt missed time in the first half but returned
to the game. Meanwhile, senior guard Eric Curtis, senior tailback
Matt Encinias, junior linebacker Thomas Martin and senior lineman
Mark Temple all exited with injuries.
* The injuries to Encinias and Martin caused a few lineup changes
in the Sailors’ backfield.
When Encinias went down, fullback Trevor Theriot moved to tailback
with Martin becoming the lead blocker.
Without Martin, who suffered a leg injury, Theriot returned to
fullback and sophomore Ryan Rippon, a standout strong safety, saw his
first work at tailback.
* Los Altos wasn’t the only Miramonte League team to knock a Sea
View League team out of the playoffs. Wilson, which finished second
to the Conquerors, defeated Foothill in overtime.
The Sea View League saw three of its four teams bounced from the
postseason, with only Irvine advancing to the second round.
