The Newport Harbor-Woodbridge football game on Oct. 14 was the first
Sailors game I covered this season, and I wasn’t really sure what to
expect. The weather was cold and the Sailors needed a win in order to
make the playoffs. Both the offense and the defense were firing on
all cylinders, leaving the visiting Woodbridge team bewildered and
unable to put any plays together.
The shot of senior running back Matt Encinias stepping on the back
of a fallen Woodbridge defender on a carry best symbolized the
Sailors’ attitude that game, and also how the team fought hard all
season long.
Unfortunately, the Sailors ran into a very tough Los Altos team in
the first round of the CIF Division VI playoffs Friday night and
lost, ending their season, and finishing up our football coverage for
the year. I was lucky enough to see some great match-ups this season,
as well as plays, and I can’t wait for next season to start.
