Cool nights, hot jazz

JIM DE BOOM
If you are looking for a place to entertain family and friends over
the holidays, make a visit to Duke’s Place at the Balboa Bay Club to
hear the Marc LeBrun Trio on a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday
night.
LeBrun, 42, is a gifted jazz pianist and singer who accompanied
the likes of Tom Jones, Olivia Newton John, Diane Schuur, Larry
Gatlin, Maureen McGovern, Roberta Flack and Nell Carter.
Beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursday and at 8 p.m. on
Fridays and Saturdays, LeBrun, accompanied by Gordon Peek on the
drums and John Pintoff on bass, will warm the evenings atmosphere
with interpretations of the great sounds of Frank Sinatra, Nat “King”
Cole, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.
LeBrun has some 5,000 songs committed to memory, responds to most
any requested and music and dancing is encouraged. Duke’s Place is
open to the public and valet parking is validated with a purchase of
drink or food. On a cool night, enjoy hot jazz in the warm atmosphere
of Duke’s Place.

READING
BY 9
Newport- Mesa school board President Martha Flour was the first to
donate to this year’s Reading by 9 matching challenge from the Rotary
Clubs of Newport-Balboa, Newport Irvine and Newport Beach Sunrise.
She was quickly joined by former Costa Mesa mayor and preschool
director Mary Hornbuckle, Elizabeth Stahr, George and Natlie Fox, and
Betts Harley as we begin to match the $6,800 provided by the clubs.
Check the Daily Pilot pages for the quarter-page display ad to use to
send in your contribution to buy reading books for Pomona, Whittier
and Wilson Elementary Schools.
The Rotary Clubs of Newport-Balboa, Newport Irvine and Newport
Beach Sunrise, along with the Daily Pilot and the Fashion Island
Fountain for Youth, were honored by the Newport-Mesa Board of
Education at a recent meeting for their support of the Reading by 9
program, which has provided more than 16,500 books for Pomona,
Whittier and Wilson elementary schools in the past four years.
At the meeting to receive the proclamation from Fluor were Ed
Rennie, president of the Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa, and Roger
McGonegal, Reading by 9 coordinator for Rotary District 5320.

WORTH REPEATING
Things to be thankful for: The mess we need to clean up after a
party ... because it means we have been surrounded by friends. The
clothes that fit a little too snug ... because it means we have
enough to eat. The windows that need cleaning ... because it means we
have a home. The huge heating bill ... because it means we are warm.
The spot we find at the far end of the parking lot ... because it
means we are capable of walking. The weariness and aching muscles at
the end of the day ... because it means we’ve been productive. The
dog that lives behind us that won’t stop barking ... because we can
hear. The complaining we hear about our government ... because it
means we have freedom of speech. The alarm that goes off in the early
morning hours ... because it means we are alive to be woken. Happy
Thanksgiving!
