Pirate outfielders say aloha to new home
Orange Coast College sophomore outfielders Jose Castaneda and Jeff
Piaskowski have each signed national letters of intent at the
University of Hawaii, OCC baseball coach John Altobelli said.
Castaneda arrived at OCC via Cypress College, where he played 29
games last year for the state champion Chargers. He hit .255 with two
home runs in 47 at-bats.
Piaskowski played in 29 games for OCC last year, batting .289 with
six home runs and 17 RBIs and playing errorless in the field.
Draganza misses cut
* GOLF: Newport Harbor High sophomore Natalie Draganza shot 81,
just three strokes from qualifying for a playoff at the CIF Southern
Section individual championships on the par-72 course at Mission
Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs Thursday.
The top 22 advanced to the CIF-WSCGA championships. Draganza
missed the cut, which was 78, for the playoff. She shot 39 on the
front and 42 coming in, which included birdies on holes 9 and 10.
Huipe is Lion of Week
* CROSS COUNTRY: Vanguard University junior women’s cross country
runner Liz Huipe, who qualified for Saturday’s NAIA championships in
Kentucky, has been named Lion of the Week.
Huipe earned her ticket to Kentucky with a time of 19:08, good for
17th place among 107 runners at the NAIA Region II championships in
Fresno.
Huipe, an Estancia High product, is hoping to better her personal
5k record (18:36) in her first trip to the NAIA championships.
