Newport shuts out CdM

The Newport Beach girls under-11 AYSO APP team beat Corona del Mar on

Saturday, 3-0, in a rain-soaked Region 97 contest at Lincoln School.

Chelsea Barth and Tori Sarris pressured the CdM goalkeeper in the

first quarter with Barth scoring the first goal off a cross from

Lauren Grupe.

Newport continued to dominate in the second quarter when Sarah

Wilkey found the back of the net when the opposing goalkeeper dropped

the ball.

In the second half, Beth Barnard, Wilkey and Claire Silva took

several shots and Silva scored the third goal of the game off a cross

from Blakeley Ficenec.

Gwen Gaylord, Sadye Busby and Mary Yeager played great defense

while Hannah McLeod and Veronica McLean were solid in the goal.

Amy Kanotz, Natalie Swift and Kianna Whipple worked hard at

midfield to keep Newport strong.

The game was called at the end of the third quarter due to heavy

rain.

In girls under-14 action:

* Spiffinators 3, Newport Crush 2:

Newport Crush lost their first game of the season in the playoffs,

but it was a tremendous game for both teams.

The Crush had a penalty kick with less than two minutes to go in

the game to tie it, but the shot was blocked by the Spiffinators’

keeper, Laura Catron.

Kara Foster scored two goals for the Spiffinators and Marlena

Hamilton added another.

The Spiffinator defense was led by Alexandra McIntosh at sweeper

and Haley Willard and Kylie Sheppard at midfield. Stellar

performances by Alyssa Lee, Katherine Sanders and Linda Freeman held

the Crush to two goals.

Kristin Bassler and Brittany Sowers scored one goal each for the

Crush and keeper Nichole Horlick had double-digit saves.

In girls under-12 play:

* Blue Attitude 1, Blue Crush 0 (semifinals): Two of the best

goalkeepers, Tabitha Goff and Lindsay Anderson, in the division

squared off on Sunday morning with the rest of their teammates.

The Crush’s Paige More and Ava Nelson led several attacks, but the

Attitude’s Goff turned them away.

The Attitude kept Anderson busy with shots from Sarah Buckingham,

Emily Rosales and Erika Page.

Midfielders Morgan Moody and Kathryn Zimmermann kept feeding the

ball into center when MacKenna Zorn, who scored a goal late to break

the tie.

Katie Kehoe had another strong game for the Attitude as did

defenders Nikki Vieira, Caitlin Tona and Brianna Truxton.

* Blue Attitude 1, Soccer Sirens 0 (championship):

Buckingham took a pass from Vieira and fired a shot that hit the

cross bar. The ball dropped straight down and Zorn drilled it into

the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

Midfielders Zimmermann, Kehoe and Page kept the pressure on the

entire game as Rosales and Sammy Parisi had numerous shots on goal.

Sweeper Truxton nullified any Siren offensive attack and

goalkeeper Goff was hardly tested.

Defenders Moody and Tona made sure the Sirens never had a clean

shot on goal. Nichole Vento and Sydney Clayton played well in the

winning effort.

* Sirens 1, Breakers 0 (semifinal):

Forward Abby Michaelson scored in the first quarter off an assist

from Shayanne Usman for the game’s only goal.

Ani Harbottle, Stephanie Peterson and Paulette Loubet kept the

ball in the Sirens’ zone for much of the game.

The Sirens advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 victory over the

Hot Shots.

Avery Amles scored the lone goal from an assist by Cailea

Eisenberg.

Nicole Farah used her speed to bring the ball upfield many times.

The Sirens’ defense, which has allowed just one goal during the

playoffs, was led by Rebecca Arnold, Becky Gula and sweeper Delanie

Linden. Goalkeeper Michelle Loubet added to the shutout.

In girls under-10 play:

* Breakers 3, Golden Flames 0:

Striker Meaghan Kay scored in the first half to give the Breakers

a 1-0 lead. Her shot from the 18-yard line bounced over the Golden

Flames’ goalkeeper’s head and into the back of the net.

Early in the second half, forward Robin Young booted a ball from

the corner and twin sister Christina Young deflected it to forward

Kari Hancock, who scored the first goal in her AYSO career.

A few minutes later, sweeperback Alyson Delbrook passed to striker

Christina Young, who pounded the ball into the net for the final

goal.

The Breakers lead their flight with 10 points.

* The Fighting Pickles 4, Green Anoles 2:

Hunter Jennings scored two goals while Kaili Brande and Madison

Grant each scored one for the Pickles. Grant added two assists.

Alise Larsen, Anna Newman and Sarah Zomaya played led the midfield

while Hannah Nance and Madison Kohlenberger were strong defensively..

Sweeper Delaney Bell stopped several Green Anoles’ scoring

opportunities.

* Surfer Girls 1, Rattlers 0:

Kylee Pochirowski scored the only goal of the game in the second

quarter. The Rattlers’ offense, led by Delaney McCardle, Ricky Archie

and Julia Cordes, threatened the whole game but were slowed

considerably by sweepers Nicole Perrier and Amber Eary with strong

defensive support from Caroline Johnson, Nicolette Poivre and Sarah

Sweetland. The Surfer Girls midfield of Jenna Castillo, Emma Howard,

Kelly Torres and Taylor Dittoe kept steady pressure on the Rattlers

defense and created several scoring opportunities for Pochirowski and

Nikki Rodriguez.

Solid first half goaltending by Eary set the defensive tone of the

game, but the late-game goaltending heroics of Karli Leal clinched

the Surfer Girls victory.

In boys under-10 action:

* Toxic Fumes, 2 Spitfires 1:

The Toxic Fumes advanced to the championship final with the

victory in driving rain.

The Fumes were led by goals from Nicolas Sargeant and Vincent

Aqueveque. Supporting Sargeant and Aqueveque on offense were Hamilton

Randle, Stevie Michaelsen, and Teddy Barry, Tynan Yanaga, Marco

Martinez, Jacob Carney and Luke Rockwell led the defense.

* Toxic Fumes 2, Atomic Fireballs 0:

Sargeant and Randle scored the two goals in the shutout, which

gave the Fumes the league championship.

Outstanding goalkeeping was provided by Michaelsen and Aqueveque,

who each made many saves.

Martinez, Palmer, Carney and Yanaga shut down the opponents’

attack repeatedly while the midfield was controlled by Barry, Connor

Mullin, Rockwell and Cullen Jeheber.
