Edison wraps up Sunset League volleyball title

The Edison High girls’ volleyball team has laid claim to a share of
the 2003 Sunset League championship.
The Chargers wrapped up a portion of the league title and league’s
No. 1 seed for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs, which begin this
week.
Edison earned the crown by sweeping visiting Huntington Beach,
25-12, 25-14, 25-14.
The Chargers, who finished league play 8-2 and tied Los Alamitos
for the title, will take an overall record of 14-2 into a first-round
Division II-AA playoff game against Anaheim.
The Colonists (11-5) are an at-large entry from the Orange League.
Despite losing its regular season finale to Edison, Huntington
Beach (9-9) received an at-large bid to the playoffs.
The Oilers will open the Division II-AA playoffs on the road at
Santa Fe.
The Chiefs (16-6) are champions of the Del Rio League.
Marina, the defending Division I-A champion, had its season come
to an end in a 15-25, 21-25, 6-25 loss to co-champion Los Alamitos.
In previous action from the past week, Huntington Beach downed
Marina, 25-21, 25-16, 25-18, and Edison was a 25-20, 25-21, 25-12
winner over Fountain Valley.
Ocean View, which won the outright Golden West League
championship, takes on Louisville in a first-round Division III-A
matchup.
Louisville is an at-large entry from the Mission League.
Ocean View defeated Rancho Alamitos 25-13, 25-22, 25-14, in
nonleague play.
In girls’ tennis, the Huntington Beach doubles tandem of Amy
Kaufman and Stacy Kaufman reached the championship round of the
Sunset League doubles final. The duo was defeated there by Fountain
Valley’s top doubles team of Amy Nguyen and Margaret Pietrowski.
At the Golden West League cross country finals, Ocean View
finished sixth overall in the boys’ and girls’ races.
In boys’ water polo, Edison edged rival Fountain Valley, 10-9, in
Sunset League action.
