Cal Poly’s Day honored

Former Costa Mesa High multi-sport standout Sharon Day, who has
shined this season for the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo women’s soccer
team, was tabbed Tuesday as the Big West Conference Freshman of the
Year.
Day, the third Cal Poly player to receive an individual honor
following Defensive Player of the Year Sierra Simmons and Goalkeeper
of the Year Greta Shirdon, scored six goals and recorded a team-high
six assists. She helped the Mustangs win last weekend’s Big West
tournament at UC Irvine and gain an automatic berth into the NCAA
tournament.
UCI’s Hayley McNallan, Caroline Kabe and Alyson Spencer were voted
first-team All-Big West by the circuit’s coaches. Day was a
second-team honoree.
Bucs bank on playoffs
* SOCCER: Sophomore Marco Santangelo of Orange Coast College
scored in the 87th minute Tuesday as the Pirates edged host Santiago
Canyon, 1-0, in Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer action.
OCC (13-5-1, 10-3-1 in the OEC) is hoping for a berth in the
Southern California regional playoffs, in which pairings will be
announced today.
Biola sweeps host VU
* VOLLEYBALL: Visiting Biola swept Vanguard, 30-19, 30-24, 30-27,
in Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball action
Tuesday. Keri DeHaas led VU (14-11, 8-11 in the GSAC) with 13 digs
and nine kills. Biola is 28-5, 15-4.
Vanguard opens in style
* BASKETBALL: Celilia Josefsson drained six of 11 three-point
tries to earn a game-high 18 points to lead the Vanguard University
women’s basketball team to a 66-52 nonconference victory over host
San Diego State to open the season Tuesday night. Kelly Schmidt
scored 15 points while Lisa Faulkner added 14 to go with Lacey Burns’
13 for the Lions, rated No.4 in the NAIA. Lacey Mills (six points)
rounded out the scoring for Vanguard.
Sage Hill makes history
* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill School’s girls volleyball team claimed the
school’s first victory in the CIF Southern Section playoffs in any
sport Tuesday night with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-19, Division IV-A
first-round victory over host Fairmont Prep.
Sophia Hillgren led the Lightning (9-8) with 15 kills followed by
10 from Cat Dailey. Hillgren added five service aces. The Lightning
will play Maranatha in the second round Thursday with a coin flip
today to determine the home team.
Sailors finish unbeaten
* FOOTBALL: The Newport Harbor High freshmen football team
defeated host Laguna Hills, 20-16, Thursday to finish the season
undefeated in nine games and clinch the Sea View League championship.
Laguna Hills fell to 7-2.
