Breakers gain share of PCL girls’ tennis crown

The Laguna Beach High girls’ tennis team claimed on Tuesday a share

of the Pacific Coast League championship with a 12-5 victory over

University.

Sophomore Claire Rietsch swept at No. 1 doubles, sophomore Lorren

Butterwick won two at No. 2 singles, with a third match canceled due

to darkness and No. 3 singles Katie Ochwat, also a sophomore, won two

of three.

The Breakers’ No. 1 doubles tandem of senior Jackie Reed and

sophomore Kellie Ammerman, also earned a sweep of their Trojan

opponents.

In girls’ volleyball Tuesday, Laguna suffered a 25-22, 20-25,

18-25, 17-25 loss to visiting Tesoro.

In boys’ water polo played Monday, Laguna stepped out of Pacific

Coast League play and went on the road to down La Habra, 13-12.

The Breakers pulled out the win by outscoring the Highlanders,

5-2, in the fourth quarter.

Trevor Frimond paced Laguna’s scoring attack with six goals.

Nima Mortazavi finished with five goals and Ryan Fair scored a

pair.

In the latest CIF Southern Section rankings, both the Laguna boys’

and girls’ cross country teams continue to hold down the No. 3

ranking in Division IV.

In girls’ tennis, Laguna comes in at No. 5 in Division I and in

girls’ volleyball, the Breakers are No. 8 in the Division IVAA poll.
