With title in hand, Newport Harbor prepares to take on Sea Kings

The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team, champion of the Sea

View League, finished the season undefeated in league play after a

25-14, 25-20, 25-16 victory over host Woodbridge Thursday.

Senior Lauren Miller led the Sailors (20-5, 10-0 in league) with

14 kills, while senior Emily Turner and Alyson Jennings added 10 and

nine kills, respectively. Turner also had two aces, and Jennings also

provided 18 assists. Junior Taryn Tarnutzer collected six kills and

senior Kellie King amassed 20 assists and had one ace. The Warriors

finished 6-4 in league.

The Sailors will face Back Bay rival Corona del Mar today at 5:15

p.m. at Newport.

Geocaris takes second

* TENNIS: Sage Hill School freshman Sarah Geocaris and the doubles

team of Jessica Tsoong and Sarah Flynn reached the Academy League

finals and finished as runners-up Thursday at the Balboa Bay Club

Racquet Club.

In singles, Geocaris lost to Fairmont Prep’s Bianca Aboubakare,

6-1, 6-4. Geocaris defeated Annie Lu of Whitney, 6-0, 6-3 to reach

the title match. Sage Hill freshman Stephanie Langer reached the

semifinals, losing to Aboubakare, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, Tsoong and Flynn defeated Oxford Academy’s Kim Perez

and Angela Kim, 6-1, 6-3, to reach the final, but then lost to the

St. Margaret’s tandem of Debbie McIntyre and Pam Jacobsen, 7-6, 6-2.

OCC to play for third

* WATER POLO: Orange Coast College advanced to the third-place

game at the Orange Empire Conference women’s tournament Thursday,

defeating Cypress in the first round, 8-4, but falling to top-seeded

Golden West, 9-3.

The Pirates (14-13) will play in the third-place game Saturday at

Golden West College at 11:30 a.m.

Courtney Robertson led Coast with three goals in its victory over

Cypress. Sara Natalizio came up with six steals and Mary Stashak made

three saves.

Tars tandems in semis

* TENNIS: The top-seeded Newport Harbor High doubles tandem of

A.J. Olson and Diana Khoury, as well as the unseeded Sailor duo of

Vanessa Dunlap and Bonnie Adams, won two matches Thursday to advance

to the semifinals of the Sea View League individual girls tennis

championships at Heritage Park in Irvine.

Olson and Khoury defeated a team from Aliso Niguel, 6-1, 6-1, in

the round of 16, then swept a team from Laguna Hills, 6-0, 6-0, in a

quarterfinal.

The Sailor duo will meet a team from Foothill in the 12:30 p.m.

semifinal, with the winner advancing to the 2:15 p.m. title match.

Dunlap and Adams defeated fellow Sailors Brittany Sturgess and

Megan McKay, 6-1, 6-0, in the round of 16, then earned a 6-4, 5-7,

6-2 quarterfinal win over a team from Woodbridge.

In singles, Newport’s Chrissy Schwatz and Carolyn Hustedt were

each defeated in the quarterfinals.

Schwartz defeated an Aliso Niguel foe, 6-0, 6-4, in the round of

16, before falling to Woodbridge’s Natalie Call, 6-2, 6-2.

Hustedt beat Connie Pham from Aliso, 6-2, 7-5, before being bested

by Woodbridge’s Ashley Williams, 6-0, 6-0.

Tars end as co-champs

* TENNIS: The Newport Harbor High girls defeated visiting Laguna

Hills, 14-4, to win a share of the Sea View League title with

Woodbridge Wednesday.

Vanessa Dunlap, Bonnie Adams and Chrissy Schwartz swept in singles

for the Sailors (13-4, 9-1 in league).

Newport Harbor’s junior varsity team won the Sea View League title

outright, going undefeated in league play.

Sage Hill loses in four

* VOLLEYBALL: Cat Dailey and Sophia Hillgren recorded 11 kills

each, but the Sage Hill School girls volleyball team lost to Academy

League host Brethren Christian, 25-10, 25-23, 24-26, 25-13, Thursday.

Sage Hill (9-7, 6-4 in league) finished third in the Academy

League, automatically qualifying for the CIF Southern Section

Division IV-A playoffs, which start next week.

St. Margaret’s won the league title and Brethren Christian came in

second.

Nellor places second

* TENNIS: Estancia High senior Stacie Nellor finished second in

the Golden West League finals Wednesday at Ocean View.

Nellor lost in the championship singles match, 0-6, 2-6, to

Saddleback’s Molly Banos.

The Estancia doubles team of seniors Huong Thai and Kittiya

Sudhikam finished third, defeating a Santa Ana tandem, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
