Sailors shut out Vaqueros; record now 8-0
Newport Harbor High’s freshmen football team remained undefeated with
a 44-0 Sea View League victory over visiting Irvine Thursday with
running back Jasen Ruiz scoring four touchdowns.
Ruiz returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and Newport
(8-0) then scored on its first offensive play.
Quarterback Kevin Williams hit Jarrett Daniel across the middle
and Daniel sprinted untouched for the final 60 of the 80-yard scoring
play. Ruiz scored his second touchdown on a 25-yard run with blocks
from an offensive line of James Skahen, Ian Fowler, Frank Muscatello,
Brian Lawler and Bryce Jardine. Williams completed passes to Daniel
for each of the first three two-point conversions.
Ruiz scored from 5 yards to begin the second half and Newport’s
next score was set up when Nick Frazier intercepted a pass on
Irvine’s fake punt attempt and returned it to the 15-yard line.
Ruiz’s fourth TD came on the next play.
Dan Winkle returned an interception 15 yards for the Sailors’
final touchdown.
Ben Buttolph, Brett Houten, Frazier and Ruiz led the linebacking
corps while the defensive line of Madison Morrell, Josh Kelleher,
Mike Calabrese and Brian Beaudette prevented Irvine from mounting any
substantial offensive drive.
