soccer team’s lone goal, but it wasn’t enough as host Santa Ana found

the back of the net seconds before halftime and held on for a 2-1

Orange Empire Conference victory Friday.

the Dons.

Coast goalkeeper Christian Lopez made eight saves. Coast fell to

10-5-1, 7-3-1 in the OEC.

Tars split in tourney

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team will

play in the consolation semifinals today after splitting two matches

in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions Friday.

The Sailors lost the first match to Stockdale (23-2), which won,

23-25, 29-27, 27-25, 25-17. Allyson Jennings led the Sailors (16-5)

with 18 kills, while Emily Turner added 12 kills and Lauren Miller

provided seven. Jennings also provided 24 assists and Kellie King had

20 assists.

“We just made too many unforced errors to beat a team of that

quality,” Newport Coach Dan Glenn said. “We could have won that

match. We had swings to win the game, but we just couldn’t do it.”

Newport closed out the day with a 25-13, 25-17, 23-25, 25-27, 15-4

victory over Oxnard. Jennings recorded 22 kills and 26 assists.

Newport teams in third

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Newport Harbor High boys and girls cross

country teams are both in third place in the Sea View League after

they went 3-2 in the league’s six-way meet at Woodbridge Friday.

The Newport boys, led by Kenny Rakestraw and Nick Miller, defeated

Aliso Niguel, 26-29, Irvine, 22-33 and Woodbridge, 23-32, but lost to

Foothill, 24-31, and was edged by Laguna Hills, 27-28.

Rakestraw finished sixth (16:09) to lead the Sailors (6-4), while

Miller came in eighth (16:27). Nick St. Andre contributed to Newport,

coming in 13th (16:47).

Mike Donald and Cameron McLaren suffered injuries during the race,

but Martin Bernard and Adam Mayfield stepped up, Newport Coach Nowell

Kay said. Donald had his leg muscles tightening up, while McLaren

accidentally tripped over a sprinkler.

Bernard finished 20th (17:10), and Mayfield came in 23rd (17:13).

Kay and his squad are excited about the league finals Friday at

Irvine Regional Park.

“We definitely haven’t ran our best race of the season,” Kay said.

“Our best race is still to come.”

On the girls side, Whitney Blue led Newport (7-3) with a

fourth-place finish (18:47), and freshman Lily Dierkes made the

difference for the Sailors, Coach Eric Tweit said.

Dierkes was supposed to run for the frosh-soph team, but because

of injuries she competed in varsity and certainly contributed.

“She was the real difference in beating the three teams we did,”

Tweit said.

Newport eked past Laguna Hills, 27-28, defeated Foothill, 27-29,

and earned a 25-20 win over Irvine. Courtney Marshall, who had been

17 kills from Breanne Ogden and 16 from Jordan Smith. Lauren Snell

Conference wins last week, was named Lion of the Week.

International.

The two wins improved VU to 13-7, 7-7 in the GSAC and upped the

Lions from No. 8 to No. 6 in the Region II rankings. The top six

teams at the end of the regular season will make the Region II

playoffs.

The 13 wins are also a school record.

VU No. 4 in NAIA

* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University women’s basketball team,

which finished third in the NAIA Tournament last season, earned a No.

4 preseason ranking in the NAIA poll released this week.

Coach Russ Davis’ Lions were No. 7 in the final poll last season,

when they finished 28-10.
