Sowers Middle School basketball team improved to 4-0 at both the
eighth- and seventh-grade levels by defeating Costa Mesa.
Sowers 42, Costa Mesa 13
Sowers led the eighth-grade contest, 21-10, in the third period of
play before running away to victory.
Dalia Webb scored 14 points and Leslie De Jesus scored 12 as the
two combine on 13 of 18 shooting from the field.
Also supporting the Lady Vikings’ effort was Kelsey Hwang with
five assists and Bree Williston with four points and six rebounds.
Sowers 32, Costa Mesa 5
Using a stifling, full-court defense from the start, Sowers’
seventh-grade team opened the contest with a 14-0 run en route to a
rout of the Mustangs.
Seven different Lady Vikings broke into the scoring column, with
Kelly Peterson leading the way with 10 points.
Mary Madden added eight points and also had eight rebounds and
three assists.
“It’s rare that you have a post player who can bang around the
inside but can handle the ball, pass and shoot, like Mary,” Sowers
Coach Kyle Morita said. “She’s really developed into a complete
player.”
Point guard Michelle Yamasaki matched four points with four
assists and Danielle Miller had four points and five rebounds to add
to the Sowers cause.

Grace Lutheran 20, St. John’s 13
Grace Lutheran’s victory over St. John’s of Orange, which came
despite the absence of several key players due to injury, improved
the team’s record to 5-0 in Lutheran School League play.
Devon Shinn led all scorers with 18 of Grace Lutheran’s 20 points
and Chloe Kaneko scored a late basket to protect the lead.
Brianna Ferguson, Emily Janio and Stephanie Schmidt played well at
both ends of the court and Katie Glavinic and Megan Rahman came up
with key steals near the end of the game.
Grace Lutheran 20, Abiding Savior 4
Grace Lutheran used a balanced scoring attack and smothering
defense to down Abiding Savior of Lake Forest for its sixth league
victory.
Tori Smith led all scorers with eight points and added four
rebounds and three steals. Devon Shinn scored six points and have
five assists and 12 steals, Kelsey Hollenbeck scored four points with
four rebounds and Allison Middleton scored a basket and had three
steals.
Emily Janio and Brianna Ferguson each had five rebounds and three
steals, Chloe Kaneko had a pair of rebounds and three steals.
In limiting Abiding Savior to just four points, Grace’s tough
defense received contributions from Stephanie Schmidt, Kate Jensen,
Kayln Lipps, Amanda Garske, Jasmine Simonian, Katie Glavinic, Jadie
Page and Christine Cacho-Negrete.
