* Corona del Mar sophomore linebacker Shaun Mohler has been cleared

to play in Thursday’s first-place battle against Northwood.

Mohler had originally been assumed suspended because of two

unsportsmanlike conduct penalties that resulted in an ejection from

Friday’s victory over Calvary Chapel.

But after watching the tape, Sea Kings Coach Dick Freeman said one

of the penalties was actually on junior linebacker Tyler Lance. The

game official saw the tape Monday and agreed, clearing Mohler of the

second infraction and the suspension.

* Five masked men wearing Speedos, likely Aliso Niguel students,

ran across the field near the end of halftime, running through the

sign that Newport Harbor cheerleaders had made for the Sailors to run

through.

The masked men then sprinted off into the darkness, north of the

Aliso Niguel Stadium with security making a belated and unsuccessful

attempt to nab them. The cheerleaders made a few necessary

adjustments to their sign, which the Sailors ran through seconds

later.

* With less than two minutes left before halftime, Estancia

senior Noe Martinez returned a kickoff for 60 yards, setting up the

Eagles at Santa Ana’s 25-yard line. The Eagles went on to score their

first touchdown. At halftime, Martinez was crowned homecoming king.

* With two catches against Orange High, Costa Mesa junior Jeff

Waldron has had at least one reception the first seven games this

season. That seven-game streak is unrivaled in recent Mustang annals,

ever since Myron Miller installed his smashmouth double wing in his

first season in 1992. Several Mesa players had managed six-game

streaks since ’92.

* Dense fog that made it difficult for spectators in the stands to

see the far sideline, apparently didn’t hamper a Corona del Mar High

touchdown pass thrown from roughly the right hash marks into the far

left corner of the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Junior receiver Kevin Welch, who slipped out of view from the

press box as he ran his fade pattern on the play, said he saw the

white stripes on the ball, thrown by twin brother Tom Welch, all the

way. Tom Welch said he saw Kevin make the catch in the end zone, even

though most of the CdM fans in the stands could not.

* The extra moisture in the air added to that on the grass Friday

night, making footing difficult, at times. CdM kicker David Del

Fante, however, didn’t let the slippery grass keep him from

converting a 33-yard field goal, despite falling to his back on the

play, as his plant foot gave way under the damp grass.

* Sailors senior left guard Eric Curtis left the game with an

ankle injury on the first play of Harbor’s second series Friday. He

was replaced by senior Mark Temple.

Curtis is doubtful for this week’s game against Irvine. It is the

second ankle injury for Curtis this season, but it was his other

ankle this time.

* It was Newport Harbor’s first loss to Aliso Niguel in school

history. The Sailors had won the previous four meetings, all in the

last four years, by a combined score of 105-29.

* First-year Calvary Chapel Coach Lyle Lansdell was greeted warmly

by CdM coaches, with whom he used to work as the Sea Kings offensive

coordinator. But those in charge of the CdM game program apparently

have a shorter memory, as the program misspelled his name as

Lanadell.

* Lansdell’s Eagle staff includes former Costa Mesa High standout

Rick Hoffman, who works with the offensive line and the linebackers.

Hoffman had been coaching at the youth level.

* The three points scored by Costa Mesa in Thursday’s loss to

Orange were the fewest by the Mustangs in 64 games, dating back to a

22-0 loss to then-Pacific Coast League rival Laguna Hills in Week 9

of the 1997 season.

* Players from the Estancia football team signed two get well

cards for Santa Ana quarterback Felix Munoz, who had surgery to

remove a blood clot on his brain after collapsing in a Saints’ loss

Oct. 16. The Eagles went to UC Irvine Medical Center Thursday

afternoon, but Munoz had already been released. Instead, the Eagles

gave the cards to Santa Ana Coach Jesse Gomez after Friday’s game.
