Jorgen Arnesen and Pablo Pires de Almeida of San Francisco, 8-6, in

the championship match.

“Brian and John were the No. 1 seed and the pressure was on them,”

UCI Coach Steve Clark said. “They really stepped up. They have to be

one of the best [UCI] doubles team since Mike Briggs and Trevor

Kronemann.”

On the year, Endrikat and Morton are 10-1 and will head to the

Tars take day off

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Newport Harbor High boys and girls cross

country teams did not compete in the Mt. San Antonio College

Invitational because of the weather conditions and air effected by

the fires nearby Saturday.

The teams conducted a workout in Newport Beach instead, said Eric

Tweit, the girls cross country coach and the school’s boys athletic

director.

The Mt. SAC Invitational had three-mile races in the morning, and

then went to two miles in the afternoon, when the Sailors were

expected to run.

In addition to the poor conditions, Tweit did not want to have his

runners experience the Mt. SAC course with just two miles of running

on it. Newport boys cross country coach Nowell Kay did not want his

runners to take in the bad air.

They decided Friday not to go to the meet.
