Sage Hill hands Eagles first loss
All three of Sage Hill School’s doubles teams swept for the second
time this season as the host Lightning sent Estancia High to its
first loss this season with a 16-2 nonleague girls tennis victory
Friday at Park Newport.
The Lightning duos of Jessica Tsoong-Sarah Flynn, Grace
Graham-Laura Webb and Carissa Cummings-Rachel Heyler each won all
three sets while teammates Stephanie Langer and Sarah Geocaris swept
in singles. Alle Hsu won one set to lead the Lightning (12-3) over
the Eagles (13-1), who won the Golden West League with a victory over
Orange Thursday.
Stacie Nellor and Sara Stratton won Estancia’s two sets.

Coast ties Hornets
* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team had an
opportunity to score, but ran out of time and had to settle for a 0-0
tie with Orange Empire Conference host Fullerton Friday.
Fullerton’s goalie was on the ground and out of the goal, and OCC
had the ball within the 18-yard box. But the official blew the
whistle to end the game, Pirate Coach Barbara Bond said.
Freshman goalkeeper Michelle Vahdatipour recorded three saves for
the Pirates (8-6-2, 4-5-2 in conference).
Eagles rout Seahawks
* WATER POLO: Estancia High’s boys water polo team jumped to a
10-0 lead and never looked back in a 14-5 Golden West League victory
Friday over visiting Ocean View.
Chad Kunert and Anthony Hermann each scored four goals while Paul
Collier and Sean Goodman added two scores apiece. Danny Alderete
found the back of the cage once for the Eagles (6-10, 1-4 in league).
Collier added two steals.
Richard McElveny made eight saves in his second time in goal this
season while Brock McDonald, playing his first varsity game, stopped
seven Seahawk shots.

UCI players advance
* TENNIS: The top-seeded doubles team of senior Jon Endrikat and
junior Brian Morton advanced to the semifinals of the the ITA West
region championships Friday at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
The UC Irvine pair handily defeated a team from San Diego, 8-1, in
the first round. They defeated an Arizona opponent, 8-2, in the round
of 16. In the quarterfinals, they defeated a San Diego team, 8-4.
They will face the third seed from Pepperdine today in the
semifinals.
UCI’s Zoran Korac-Ryusuke Kashiwabara also advanced to the second
round. In singles, Korac was the lone Anteater to advance to the
round of 16, defeating Roger Matalonga of Arizona 6-4, 6-0 and Jason
Pongsrikul of San Diego 6-3, 6-7. 6-4. Korac will face Scott Doemer
of Pepperdine today.
Lasers edge Pirates
* SOCCER: Matt Fennell scored on a cross from Jose Serpas to give
the Orange Coast College men’s soccer team a brief lead, but the
Pirates couldn’t hold on and lost to host Irvine Valley, 2-1, in an
Orange Empire Conference game Friday.
OCC, IVC and Santa Ana entered Friday’s play with identical 6-1-1
conference records.
CdM boys, girls sparkle
* CROSS COUNTRY: The Corona del Mar High boys won the Division III
title Friday at the Mt. SAC Invitational in a two-mile race. The Sea
Kings were paced by Kevin Artz (11:14), Jerrit Thayer (11:36), Jack
Turner (11:45), Kenneth Wong (11:47) and Brandon Borcoman (11:51),
while Ryan Guthrie (11:53) and J.C. Turner (11:56) contributed.
The CdM girls placed third in the sweepstakes race (three miles)
behind Annie St. Geme (18:48), Hilary May (19:43), Taryn Kawata
(20:02), Ahlia Kattan (20:23) and Devon Ahern (20:28). Christie St.
Geme (20:40) and Jen Logan (21:02) also competed. Santa Margarita won
the race.
Costa Mesa’s Jasmin Day placed sixth in the Division III girls
sweepstakes race to lead the Mustang girls to a sixth-place finish.
Day (18:57) was followed by teammates Emily Cotton (19:47),
Christine Bjelland (20:05), Kyla Flores (20:36), Hahn Nguyen (21:11),
Casey Brick (21:45) and Stacy Krikorian (22:31).
Estancia’s boys placed 19th out of 26 teams in the Division III
sweepstakes race with Alex Cahuantzi leading the way in 16:43. He was
followed by teammates Matt Zich (17:01), C.J. Buchman (17:20),
Ernesto Castaneda (17:21), Panfilo Elias (18:54), Martin Diaz (19:42)
and Eric Palafax (19:51).
Sage Hill’s boys placed 12th out of the 16-team Division V
sweepstakes race. Zach Chandy led the way for the Lightning (17:44),
followed by Tim Lefler (18:08), Tristan Cordier (18:10), Chris
Chiboucas (18:18) and Mike Voge (18:20).
Lightning girls ran in the underclassmen races. Freshman Mollie
McGann placed 13th in 14:59 in the two-mile race followed by Kara
Percival (15:32) and Erica Faris (15:34).
Pirates handle Cypress
* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College women defeated host
Cypress, 30-28, 33-35, 30-18, 30-26, Friday in Orange Empire
Conference play. Christine Woller (16 kills) led the Pirates, while
Donka Drozd (14) and Amber McCarthy (38 assists) provided punch as
Orange Coast improved to 11-1, 6-1 in the OEC.
VU shut out at Fresno
* SOCCER: The Vanguard men lost to host Fresno Pacific, 5-0,
Thursday night. Goalie Tommaso Bianchi had five saves for VU (12-5-1,
5-2-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference).
Orange Coast wins pool
* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College men’s team defeated Mt.
SAC, 5-0, in the first game of the Saddleback tournament Friday and
edged El Camino, 6-5, in the second to win the pool. The Pirates will
play Rio Hondo today at 10 a.m.
