UCI unbeaten steak at five
UC Irvine freshman goalie Marissa Welliver recorded her seventh
shutout of the season as the host Anteaters tied Utah State, 0-0, in
a Big West Conference women’s soccer game Sunday that included two
overtime periods.
Welliver made two saves to up her season total to 49 in 15 games.
The Anteaters (8-3-5, 2-1-3 in conference) entered Friday’s action
ranked ninth nationally in team goals against. And, having shut out
their opponents in 58% of their first 14 games, UCI was ranked 17th
nationally.
Welliver, out of Aliso Niguel High, now has a goals-against
average of 0.62 per game.
The Anteaters, who extended their unbeaten streak to five games,
have tied their last three Sunday games and are now 3-0-4 on Sundays
this season.
Hayley McNallan had three shots for UCI, which received two shots
each from Alyson Spencer, Britney Webster, Kim Lloyd and Lauryn
Birkinshaw.
Utah State goalie Megan Mills made six saves for the Aggies
(9-5-1, 3-1-1). The Aggies, who lost at Long Beach State Friday, came
into the weekend on a five-game winning streak.
‘Eaters, Mustangs tie
* SOCCER: UC Irvine junior forward Sebastian Galmarini scored an
unassisted goal in the 31st minute, but host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
answered in the 68th minute and the two teams played two scoreless
overtime periods in a 1-1 Big West Conference men’s soccer tie
Sunday.
Danny Calderon came off the bench to knot the score for the
Mustangs, whom the Anteaters outshot, 15-13.
Cameron Rossi made six saves for UCI (3-8-1, 0-1-1), as did Greg
Blevins for Cal Pol (4-4-3, 1-2-1).
Dunlap captures crown
* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High senior Vanessa Dunlap won the 18s
singles title Sunday at the 24th annual K-Swiss Grand Prix Masters
tennis invitational at the Lakewood Tennis Center.
Dunlap defeated Maria Malec from Laguna Niguel, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, in
the final of the event, open only to the top eight individual point
winners from K-Swiss Grand Prix tournaments contested over the
summer.
Newport Harbor senior Bonnie Adams earned the consolation title
Sunday with a straight-set triumph over Jenny Tsai of Artesia.
49ers handle Anteaters
* WATER POLO: Visiting Long Beach State, ranked No. 7 in the
nation, handed No. 8-ranked UC Irvine a 7-5 men’s water polo loss
Sunday in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both
teams at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
With the score tied, 2-2, Long Beach State junior Erik Geoffroy
scored with 1:01 left in the first half to give the 49ers a lead they
would never relinquish.
Geoffroy scored back-to-back goals, one on a penalty shot, late in
the third quarter to increase the visitors’ lead to 6-3. Geoffroy
scored his fifth and final goal with 4:29 left in the game to produce
a 7-4 lead.
Senior Phil Garcia led UCI (8-10, 0-1 in conference) with three
goals, while Chris Peters and Rick Merlo also scored for Coach Ted
Newland’s squad.
Corona del Mar High produce Jason Palda scored a goal for the
49ers, who improved to 11-7, 1-0.
With nine regular-season games remaining, Newland remains six
victories from reaching 700 for his career.

Vanguard men triumph
* SOCCER: The Vanguard University men’s soccer team posted a 1-0
Golden State Athletic Conference win over visiting Azusa Pacific
Saturday night.
David McAulay scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute, cashing
in an assist by Matt Hess.
The play began when Hess received Nate Kramer’s long throw-in
inside the 18-yard box, then dropped it to McAulay, who converted to
up Vanguard’s record to 12-4, 5-1 in conference.
APU, outshot by the Lions, 15-7, fell to 8-6, 2-4.
