UCI cross country team shines at Cal Poly

The UC Irvine women’s cross country team won the Cal Poly
Invitational in San Luis Obispo Saturday.
UCI, with five runners in the top 14 places, finished with 48
points in the eight-team field. Anteater senior Tessa Cendejas
finished third in 17:57.4, Kaleena Yee was seventh (18:16.8), Kim
Ramirez placed 11th (18:32.4), Janelle Del Soldato was 13th (18:39.3)
and Chelsey Traylor finished 14th in 18:50.0. Jenna Keith placed 18th
in 18:55.2 and Kelli Vanderburg was 21st in 19:04.1 to complete UCI’s
top seven.
Barnes leads UCI men
* CROSS COUNTRY: The Anteater men’s team finished third with 81
points as Stanford (21) and Cal Poly (40) placed 1-2. UCI’s Ricky Barnes finished 15th in 26:27.3, Tom Whelan 18th (26:39.5), Andrew
Garratt was 26th (27:21.8), David Santos placed 27th (27:23.9) and
Brandon Lucero was 31st in 27:44.2. Rounding out the Anteaters’ top
seven were Ryan Ketcham in 38th place (28:06.0) and John Kluve in
48th (29:10.4).
Sailors beat Los Al
* WATER POLO: Clay Jorth and Michael Bury scored two goals each as
Newport Harbor defeated visiting Los Alamitos, 7-3, Saturday in
nonleague boys water polo action at Corona del Mar.
Brett Auer, Sean McGhie and Griffin Gentry scored goals for the
Sailors (9-7), whose goalie, Michael Robinson, had eight saves and
two steals.
Lions sweep Hawks
* VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard’s women rolled to a sweeping win over
Christian Heritage Saturday night, 30-26, 30-23, 30-24, in Golden
State Athletic Conference action, in which the host Lions improved to
11-7, 5-7 in the GSAC. Sonrisa Peace (13 kills) led Vanguard, along
with Stephanie Pfau (12) and Jaclyn Lee (11). VU’s Lindsay Kaiser had
12 digs, while Marissa Cothran had 35 assists.
Lions come up short
* SOCCER: The Vanguard women hosted Azusa Pacific, the NAIA’s
top-ranked team, Saturday in Costa Mesa and lost, 2-1.
Jennifer Zipprich gave the Lions a first-half lead on an assist by
Amber Waadle, but the Cougars scored twice in the second half.
Cal Poly stuns UCI
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team could not
overcome an 0-2 deficit Saturday night as visiting Cal Poly San Luis
Obispo upset the Anteaters, 31-29, 30-22, 30-32, 31-29, in Big West
Conference action at Crawford Court.
Kelly Wing had 25 kills for UCI (16-5, 7-2 in the Big West), while
teammates Sami Cash and Trisha White had 14 each. Molly Duncan led
Cal Poly (11-9, 3-6) with 18 kills.
