Big league game for the Breakers

Having gotten rival Corona del Mar out of the way, the Laguna Beach

High football team next tackles two-time defending league champion

Northwood in a key Pacific Coast League game Oct. 24.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Guyer Field.

The Breakers, who were 3-2 entering PCL play, took on Corona del

Mar Thursday at Orange Coast College.

The score was not available at press time.

Prior to the Corona del Mar game, Laguna ended its nonleague

schedule with a 36-28 loss last Friday to visiting Magnolia in the

Breakers’ homecoming game.

The Breakers took a 21-10 lead into the fourth quarter where they

were outscored, 26-7.

Quarterback Alex Wilson threw three touchdown passes, two to Jake

Wheeler and one to Brett O’Connor.

Wilson finished with 245 passing yards.

Running back Juan Luna scored Laguna’s third touchdown on a

48-yard run in the third quarter.

Luna finished with 72 yards on 11 carries.

This past week, two juniors were named as the newest members to

the football team’s coveted “Black Watch.”

The two are Elliot Whalen, a two-way starter who plays defensive

back and wide receiver, and special teams player/linebacker Bryan

Brown.

“Black Watch” is considered to be the most prestigious award given

to a Laguna football player. It honors those players who have

demonstrated extraordinary physical, mental and emotional toughness.

The Black Watch award is voted on by other Black Watch members and

players retain their status from year to year.

Each varsity player is eligible and does not need to be a starter

to qualify.
