The Shed showcases interesting art

The Shed showcases cutting-edge art at the Cannery Village in Newport

Beach. Media represented include painting, photography, sculpture,

video, drawing and video. Its first show and reception, from 6 to 8

p.m. Saturday, will feature Richard Turner’s work. His avant-garde

series “Diptychs” uses materials from his work as an artist, teacher

and curator. Much of his work is inspired by Asian cultures. Turner

is a professor of design and Asian art history at Chapman University,

co-chair of the university’s department of Art and co-director of the

Guggenheim Gallery. Turner’s exhibit shows through Dec. 13. The Shed

is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and by

HOME TOUR

The 30th Corona del Mar Middle School and High School PTA Home

Tour will feature six beautiful homes throughout Corona del Mar and

Newport Beach on Tuesday, Oct. 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A

continental breakfast will be served at Waterworks in Corona del Mar

Plaza, and a gourmet luncheon will be provided by Pascal of Cafe

Jardin at Sherman Library & Gardens in Corona del Mar from 10:30 a.m.

to 2 p.m. Barclay Butera of Newport Beach in Westcliff Plaza, a

popular home furnishings store, will host an afternoon reception from

3 to 6 p.m. The home tour helps provide funds for academic

enrichment, art and music programs for students. Tickets can only be

purchased in advance. They cost $50 and cover breakfast, lunch and

the afternoon reception. They’re being sold at Fashion Island

Concierge, Sherman Library & Garden Gift Shop, Newport Hills Drugs,

Barclay Butera of Newport Beach and Corona del Mar Middle School and

LIFE OF LUXURY

The first “Luxury By Design” celebrates luxury brands today

through Sunday at South Coast Plaza. Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover

and Volvo present the event, which features rare models and the

latest models, product specialists, and special exhibits throughout

the mall. On view are Jaguar race cars, the Aston Martin Collection,

competition autos from Land Rover and a Concept Lab Volvo, that

allows customers to participate in product design. Many exclusive

boutiques offer champagne and dessert receptions, informal modeling,

trunk shows and show items that just arrived from Europe. (714)

COSMETIC LESSONS

Stevens and Cross Cosmetics Studio in Newport Beach offers a

“60/40 makeup lesson special” through Nov. 15. You’ll learn ways to

enhance your look with expert makeup techniques while trying the

latest fall and winter colors. Make an appointment with Richard

Stevens or Julia Cross and you’ll receive a lesson for $60 and $40

worth of makeup after completing the appointment. (It normally costs

$95). The studio also offers expert advice on eyebrow shape. They

even taught QVC listeners about eyebrows for three years. At each

SHOPPING FUN

The Christmas Company, the 28th annual shopping extravaganza

presented by the Junior League of Orange County, starts Sunday and

continues through Wednesday at the Orange County Fair & Exposition

Center in Costa Mesa. An opening night gala will be held Saturday

from 6 to 11 p.m. More than 80 specialty boutiques travel from all

over the country to offer a mix of unique items: darling children’s

apparel, fashion jewelry, gourmet specialties, home accessories and

much more. The Christmas Company will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sunday; from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday; and from 10 a.m.

to 6 p.m. Wednesday. A free general admission ticket will be given to

those who bring in a gift certificate or gift card ($7 minimum value)

from Target, movie theaters or bookstores. Collections will be

donated to children in need through the Junior League’s charities.
