Crushing loss for the Army Girls

Kristin Bassler scored three goals to lead the Newport Crush to a 4-0

victory over Costa Mesa’s Army Girls in an AYSO Region 97 girls

under-14 soccer game Oct. 4.

Brittany Sowers, who added a goal, and Margaret Vento assisted on

two of Bassler’s goals for the Crush, which continued its undefeated

season.

Elizabeth Pratty and Katrina Johnson led the Crush defense with

three saves and goalkeeper Nichole Horlick made three saves.

In other girls under-14 action:

* Spiffinators 3, Newport Team No. 3 1:

The Spiffinators won their sixth consecutive game with two goals

from Nikki Liddicote and one from Katie Puccio.

Linda Freeman, Katherine Sanders, Haley Willard and Alyssa Lee led

the defense.

In girls under-12 play:

* Blue Attitude 2, Hot Spurs 0:

Sarah Buckingham and Emily Rosales each scored goals to lead the

Blue Attitude.

Kathryn Zimmerman and Kaitlin Kehoe assisted on each goal,

respectively.

Hot Spots’ Kaely Turney, Kate Randle and Whitney Richardson turned

back Blue Attitude attacks from Samantha Parisi, MacKenna Zorn,

Sydney Clayton and Morgan Moody.

Ashley Erickson, Veronica Seidner, Kelsey Hirsch and Jackie Graham

led Hot Spots attacks.

Nichole Vieira, Nichole Vento, Caitlin Tona, Erika Page and

Brainna Truxton kept the pressure away from Blue Attitude goalkeeper

Tabitha Goff.

In boys under-12 play:

* Raiders 3, Avalanche 1:

Wyeth Rietveld, Mario Figueroa and Rory Kew each scored goals to

lead the Raiders, who remain undefeated.

Goalkeeper Jordan McLaren made numerous saves in goal during the

first quarter.

Jack Ahearn’s defensive play in the third quarter led to Kew’s

goal while Chris Mendez, Kevin Nguyen, Devin Hovis and Charlie

Massingill all controlled their positions.

Easton Giedt and Austin Knott each had shots on goal.

* Mighty Mustards 3, Black Jacks 0:

The Black Jacks put forth a valiant effort in fielding only eight

players against the Mighty Mustards.

Wil Curiel, Ryan Andrews, Mathew DiFrancesco and Tyler Collins

provided solid play at various positions while Kyle Evans, Luke

Dawson, Daniel Netzer and Matthew Hurst rotated at goalkeeper and

other field positions.

In girls under-11 play:

* Newport 3, Yorba Linda 0:

The Newport APP team remained undefeated with the win.

Chelsea Barth scored off an assist from Blakeley Ficenec to put

Newport ahead, 1-0, after a scoreless first half.

Ficenec scored later in the third quarter off an assist from Sarah

Wilkey. Wilkey found the back of the net on an assist from Natalie

Swift in the fourth quarter.

Amy Kanotz, Tori Sarris, Mary Yeager, Kiana Whipple and Lauren

Grupe controlled the midfield with Gwen Gaylord, Beth Barnard and

Sadye Busby providing solid defense.

Hannah McLeod and Veronica McLean led the charge in goal.

Newport beat Costa Mesa, 1-0, Sept. 20 before tying North Irvine,

1-1, Sept. 27. It faces Tustin at 12:15 p.m. Saturday at Mariners

Park.

In girls under-10 action:

* Fireballs 1, Surfer Girls 0:

Kirsten Rohan scored the only goal of the game in the third

quarter on an indirect kick from Ailani Hause to keep the Fireballs

undefeated.

Both defenses shined, turning away many shots on goal.

Molly Anderson took two shots on goal in the first half that were

turned away by Surfer Girls’ goalkeeper Karli Leal. Rachel Vensand

then booted two more shots on goal in the second half, which were

blocked by Surfer Girls’ keeper Emma Howard.

Kate Batstone hustled throughout the game and made some sound

passes to the midfield. Midfielders Christine Jacques and Gianna

Light also played well.

Fireballs’ defender Morgan Long marked her opponents well and was

often first to the ball while Elyssa Barnett cleared numerous times.

Chelsea Taylor and Christiana Dupont provided strong play.

Sofia Muscatello made one save for the Fireballs.

The Surfer Girls’ Nicole Perrier took one shot that just missed

the far post in an attempt to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

Leal and Emma Howard each had two saves in goal for the Surfer Girls.

Taylor Dittoe and Kelly Torres moved the ball well up field while

Amber Eary, Nicollette Poivre, Nicky Rodriguez and Sarah Sweetland

added strong defense. Kylee Pochirowski also played well.

* Blue Crush 6, Cougars 5:

Courtney Buck scored on three of her five shots and Brinley

Siemonsma and Savanna Gastineau sealed the victory with goals for the

Blue Crush.

Shannon Barth led on both offense and defense while Jamie Searles

made several steals.

Defender Kyla Kerr kept the ball outside the penalty box and Sara

Cluck made several saves in goal.

Morgan and Devin Donahue keyed the defense while Gretchen Monke

and Ana Figueroa showed their aggressiveness.

* Flames 0, Pussycats 0:

The Flames moved to 2-2-1 with the tie.

Strong performances in goal were made by Erika Wolf, Megan Bathen

and Jane Layton.

Sydney Alexander, Rachel Jennings and Sara Bradbury made several

strong defensive plays.

Kelsey Long, Dylan Alexander, Katty Ayala, Chrissia Watson and

Rachel Gray led the offense.

* Fighting Pickles 4, Rattlers 3:

Madison Grant scored two goals while Kaili Brande and Hannah Nance

each added single goals to keep the Fighting Pickles undefeated.

Forward Anna Newman played well with support from midfielder

Rachel Clayton.

Delaney Bell led the defense with help from Paisley Muller.

Alise Larsen, Madison Kohlenberger and Hunter Jennings shared time

in goal. Jennings made a strong save to preserve the win late in the

game.

In boys under-10 play:

* Red Hawks 3, Green Vipers 2:

Steven Duhoux and Christopher Sheppard led the Red Hawks to their

fourth win of the season with assists from Derek Kula and Weston

Barnes.

Midfielders James Jarvis, William Laidlaw and William Joslin all

played strong while defenders Leer Logan, Maxwell Newsome and Tyler

Kennedy held the Vipers at bay.

Goalkeepers William Fuch and Elijah Long sealed the victory for

the Hawks.

* Atomic Fireballs 2, Blue Meteors 0:

Jimmy Kinney scored two goals in the shutout.

Blake Smith passed from the left wing to feed Kinney for the first

goal.

Forward Braden Delanney was constantly by the net, ready for

rebounds.

Midfielders Tyler Palmquist, Corey Kroeger, Alex Atenco and Trent

Zimmermann created many scoring opportunities.

Logan Friend, Adam Josephson, Jack Hanle, Dylan Goodman and Sean

Duggan led the defense.

* Silver Wolves 1, A.C. Milan 1: Efe Atli ended A.C. Milan’s two-and-a-half game shutout streak

with a goal in the third quarter to give the Silver Wolves a brief

1-0 lead. Milan scored later in the third quarter on an penally shot

that glanced off the top crossbar and landed inches inside the goal.

The Silver Wolves had numerous chances to score, but were denied

by the A.C. Milan goalkeeper.

Casey Shearer, Nathan Mayhugh, Cody Lippman, Wyatt Muller and

Jason Wooding denied A.C. Milan’s offense.

Clay Smyth, Muller and Robert Boullon started the game as forwards

for the Silver Wolves.

Eli Gomez provided midfield support in front of goalkeeper Jacob

Swain.

Lippman and Cameron Candelaria rotated in at halfback and fullback

in the second quarter with Caleb Candelaria also seeing time at

forward.

In girls under-8 action:

* The Blue Jets and Glow Worms played a defensive battle with

strong goalkeeper work by Isabel Leveque and Megan Daly.

Andie Strode scored the Jets’ only goal with offensive support

from Alex Palmer.

In boys under-8 action:

* The Green Goblins’ Chas Beck opened the scoring against the

Bulls by taking a cross-field pass from Eli Botros and drilling it

into the goal for the game’s first score.

Joey Gregory trickled another shot past the Bulls’ goalie for the

game’s second goal.

T.J. Tarazevits, Wil Crook, Jake Farwell, Buddy Mitchell, Andrew

Dimas and Marc Gehlke stifled the Bulls’ offense.

In girls under-7 action:

* Riley Alexander, Libby Knight, Amanda Brown and Bryn Crowell

played well on offense for the Firecrackers against the Pink

Panthers. Knight found the back of the net in the second quarter.

Sierra Page and Reagan Rutter each played well in goal.

Ryan Moncrief, Miranda Hart and Kira Wandrocke played well at both

ends of the field.

* Annie LaGrandeur and Delanie Gastineau each scored goals for the

Fireflies against the Hula Girls in a defensive battle.

The Hula Girls added a goal late in the second quarter, but

additional shots were thwarted by LaGrandeur and Nicole Carlin.

Baylee Kneip and Brooke Netzer led some breakaways while Alex

Vasquez and Emily Wolfe defended well late in the game. Baily Wilson

added support.

* Katie Duhoux, Sabrina Sanchez and Olivia Sever scored goals for

the Groovy Girls against the Red Dragons. Kristen Kiehnle added

several shots on goal as well.

Ali Wilson and Tess Alexander shared time in goal and produced

many saves while Dani De Santis and Amanda Dupont dribbled and passed

well on offense.

In boys under-7 action:

* The Tigers and Terminators played a close game with Jack

Binford’s left-footed goal in the first quarter keying the Tigers.

Landon Knight’s free kick resulted in the Tigers’ second goal while

Ryan Braun, Baron Davis, David Hartman and Griffith Clawson drove

deep into Terminator territory for much of the second half.

Goalkeepers William Johnson and Thomas Quinn held the Terminators

at bay.

* John Drayton, Grant Fuchs and Eric Pineda made some strong

defensive plays as the Blue Flames took on the Shredders.

Will Hickman and Jimmy Preston each made strong passes and led

some breakaways.

Goalkeepers Peter Goodman and Jack Heald each turned away several

shots for the Blue Flames.

* The Red Fireballs’ Blake Jessen scored a goal off a Ben Bockrath

kick against the Red Tornadoes.

Quin McKay played well in goal with Jake Noblett contributing

solid passes.

Teammates Mickey Beliakoff, Grady Kimme, Luke Bradbury and Bryant

Putnam kept the Tornadoes from scoring.

In girls under-6 play:

* Naci Johnson and Audrey Reed both scored goals in the second

quarter for the Blue Dolphins.

Kelly McFetters played strong defense during the first quarter and

Shea Horvath blocked a shot.

Haley Martinez and Kelly McFetters each scored in the third

quarter and Carly Oostendorp showed strong defense in the fourth

period.

* Megan Keys scored her first goal of the season for the Cherry

Bombs against the Cheetah Girls. Paige Tamblyn, Emma Vujnovich, Jaqi

DeFeo and Gigi Woodall added scores with solid defense from Emma

Buggeln and Emily Fletcher.

Samantha Falasco led the scoring for the Dolphins against the

Fireflies with assists from Sonja Spencer and Brittany Woolsey.

Mackenzie Mowery, Woolsey and Spencer showed strong passing while

Savannah Boyd, Lindsey Konrad and London Davis provided support.

The Fireflies moved the ball up field and defended their goal

well.

Charlotte Monke and Laura Mackenzie narrowly missed scoring goals

after leading breakaways.

Emily Goltz added a goal in the final seconds of the game with

Quincy Morgan knocking several balls away.

Heather Roberts and Candace Callahan hovered around the action and

the Fireflies look forward to getting Erika Ellis back from a trip.

* The Groovy Grasshoppers pummeled the goal against the Purple

Pegasus with Cameron Maris, Sydney Savage, Madeline Bubb and Rylie

Niebur leading the attack.

Seneca Fuller, Olivia Zehnder, Amber Reed and Nicole Newman

starred on defense.

In boys under-6 action:

* Jack McClintock scored the Blue Sharks’ lone goal with Mason

Lindh coming close to adding another score against the Dragons.

Spike Stoneman provided strong passing and ball control with Kevin

Andonian getting open to receive some passes.

R.J. Reid and Cade Clement anchored the defense with help from

Jake Herwaarden.

* Jeremiah Sheldon scored four goals to lead the Men in Black

against the Warriors. Sean Freeman added another goal with

contributions made by David Fisher, Jake Weyrich, Dante Amodeo,

Kingston McCarthy and Andrew Laidlaw.

Sheldon, Freeman, Fisher and Laidlaw were also defensive

standouts.

* Cooper Hendrix, Sam Launder and Chase Braun each scored goals to

lead the Blue Dolphins against the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Braun, Ethan Buggeln, Phoenix Smith and Mathew Brodie provided

sound defense, especially in the second half as the Dolphins held the

Chili Peppers at bay.
