Final tuneups for locals
Three of the four local prep football teams get their final nonleague
tuneups this weekend as the 2003 season enters its fifth week.
Edison, Huntington Beach and Marina begin Sunset League play next
week. Ocean View, meanwhile, began Golden West League play last week
and continues Friday against Costa Mesa.
A look at Friday’s matchups:
Servite (4-0) vs. Edison (3-1)
(at Orange Coast College, 7 p.m.)
It’s homecoming for Edison, which will be looking to get back on
the winning track against an undefeated Servite squad.
Edison won its first three games before losing last week to Mater
Dei, 6-0. Twice in the second half -- the final time in the game’s
final seconds -- the Chargers were at the goal line but stopped just
short of scoring.
It was Edison’s first shutout loss since 1996.
Servite is 4-0 coming off a 41-0 dismantling of Rialto.
The Friars rushed for nearly 250 yards with junior running back
Omar Ramiro leading the way with 143 yards and two touchdown runs.
Quarterback Mike Lawrence, in limited playing time, threw for 113
yards to up his season yardage total to 590.
The Friars, playing their third consecutive road game, are
averaging 33 points a game. They’ll go up against an Edison defense
that, in its last three outings, limited two of those opponents to
six points and shutout the third.
Last year’s score: Servite 32, Edison 7
Marina (1-3) vs. El Toro (0-4)
(at Trabuco Hills High, 7 p.m.)
Having played teams the past three weeks that are a combined 12-0,
Marina takes on a winless El Toro team.
El Toro is coming off a 35-28 loss to Woodbridge. The Chargers
have also lost to Long Beach Wilson, Foothill and Cerritos and are
averaging 15 points per game.
Matt Bibler leads the Charger rushing attack with 386 yards and
three touchdowns.
Matt Brennan threw for 160 yards and a touchdown and Jeff Rivera
recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score last week during
Marina’s 34-14 loss to Orange Lutheran.
Last year’s game: Marina 13, El Toro 10
Ocean View (1-3) vs. Costa Mesa (2-2)
(at Newport Harbor High, 7 p.m.)
Two teams looking for their first Golden West League win will
tangle at Davidson Field.
Costa Mesa is coming off a tough, 29-28, overtime home loss to
league rival Saddleback. The Mustangs, who had a two-game win streak
snapped, lost despite getting 220 rushing yards and four touchdowns
from running back Omar Ruiz.
Costa Mesa’s potent offense is averaging 29 points a game.
Ocean View, meanwhile, will be out to right a losing streak that
reached three games last week in a 35-30 loss to Estancia.
The Seahawks held a 30-14 lead late in the fourth quarter but gave
up three touchdowns in the final 4:23.
Quarterback Brett Burda threw one touchdown pass and ran 50 yards
for another score and Anthony Love rushed for one score an returned
an interception 47 yards for another for Ocean View.
Last year’s score: Costa Mesa 26, Ocean View 7
Huntington Beach (0-4) vs. Dana Hills (1-3)
(at Dana Hills High, 7:30 p.m.)
Huntington gave its best defensive performance of the season last
week against Laguna Hills but still ended up with a 13-7 loss.
The Oilers limited Laguna Hills to just 154 yards total offense
but couldn’t muster much themselves offensively, getting only a
12-yard touchdown run from Justin Montes.
Huntington is averaging just 11 points per game.
Dana Hills, meanwhile, has been shut out twice in four games and
managed just one touchdown in last week’s 36-6 loss to Newport
Harbor.
Much like Oilers, the Dolphins, whose lone win came against
Woodbridge in the second week of the season, favor the run. They are
led in the offensive backfield by Nathan Barnett.
Last year’s game: Huntington 37, Dana Hills 20
