Ed Carroll

Ed Carroll, UC Irvine’s associate athletic director for financial

affairs, died Saturday after battling cancer for 15 months. He was

53.

A former athletic director at Cal State Fullerton, Carroll had

been at UCI since March 1991. He is survived by his wife, Connie; son

Brandon; daughter Kimberly; mother Margaret; and brother Bob.

A “celebration of life” service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at

Crawford Court in the UCI athletics complex. The service will be

jointly hosted by UCI and Cal State Fullerton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to

Carroll’s favorite organizations: the UCI Athletic Foundation; the

Cal State Fullerton wrestling program; or the Fullerton College

football program.

Rita Castorena

A memorial service for Ms. Rita Castorena, a 1978 Newport Harbor

High School graduate, is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday at the Grace

Fellowship Church at 3170 Red Hill Ave.

Ms. Castorena died in her Yorba Linda home on Thursday. She was

44.

The memorial service will be followed by a graveside service.

There will also be a reception at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Grace

Fellowship.

Ms. Castorena is survived by her son Frank, who also graduated

from Newport Harbor High last year.

Ms. Castorena was planning to attend her 25th high school reunion

this weekend.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to

a college trust fund for Fernando. His address is 17331 Calgary Ave.

Ruth B. Covington

Mrs. Ruth B. Covington, a 27-year Corona del Mar resident, died on

Oct. 1 of natural causes. She was 86.

Mrs. Covington is survived by sons Mark, Ron and Curt; daughters

Carol Thomson, Terry Covington and Kay Skidmore; 11 grandchildren and

sisters Adelaide Glynn and Edith Coy.

Private family services were held.
