Two-minute drill

* Estancia junior Geo Macias, a starter at receiver and cornerback,

caught a 78-yard touchdown bomb to bring the Eagles within 30-28 with

2:02 left. And while he savored the eventual 35-30 victory, made

possible by 21 points in the final 4:23, he said he hoped to avoid

such dramatics in the future.

“Hopefully, we’ll never get that far behind, so we have to come

back like that,” he said.

* Macias finished with a career-high 131 receiving yards on two

catches, but not without a little bending of the rules. He was

credited with a 53-yard reception on the final play of the first half

after Ocean View declined a penalty on quarterback Brad Young for

being at least 4 yards past the line of scrimmage when he delivered

the pass to Macias.

The play also padded Young’s final passing yardage total of 181

yards.

* Though Ocean View’s new on-campus stadium features a plush grass

playing surface and better-than-average lighting, the sightlines are

less than ideal.

Due to a limitation of space, the track surrounding the field is

more circular than the traditional ovals that surround most football

fields. Thus, the football sideline is about 15 yards from the inside

border of the track, placing the action much father away from the

stands.

* Estancia Coach Craig Fertig said the injury of choice this fall

for his Eagles is shoulder problems. So far, tailback-safety David

Moreno, linebacker-tight end Mike Softa and two-way lineman Landon

Pulizzi have all missed time with a shoulder ailment.

* Newport Harbor senior guard Eric Curtis was questionable for

Friday’s game because of a sprained ankle, but he was able to start

and play well on the offensive line.

Sailors Coach Jeff Brinkley said Curtis’ ankle was still puffy,

but he moved well enough in pregame drills to warrant playing time.

* With two touchdowns against Dana Hills, junior receiver Spencer

Link moved into a tie for ninth place among career touchdown leaders

at Newport Harbor High.

Link, with 17 career touchdowns, is tied with Marc Craig

(1985-86), Steve Foley (1974-76) and Steve Bukich (1971-73). One more

touchdown would tie Link with Wade Tift (1991-93) for eighth. The

career leader is Steve Brazas (1982-83), with 45.

* Saddleback Coach Jerry Witte said after his team’s overtime

victory over Costa Mesa, “I feel bad for Costa Mesa. I would rather

the game have ended in a tie because both teams fought so hard.”

* Corona del Mar High sophomore Shaun Mohler, who missed the

Battle of the Bay because of a concussion suffered against Troy, made

quite an impression with his return against Century. He intercepted a

pass and returned it 31 yards, showing some nifty moves along the

way. But there was holding on the play. Mohler also delivered a few

hard hits on defense.

* It seemed as if nothing could go right for Century Friday

night. During halftime of its 28-14 loss to CdM, the Centurions

announced their homecoming queen who was not in attendance.

* There were few negatives for the Sea Kings because they won,

but coaches were left scratching their heads after a ill-timed punt

fake. Facing fourth-and-13 and on its own 38, the Sea Kings ran a

fake punt and gained only one yard. The coaches in the booth shouted,

“Who called that?” The play helped lead the Centurions drive for a

49-yard field goal.
