Running for a good reason
There are a few handful of events every year in Newport-Mesa that
most exemplify the community’s giving nature.
The last two weekends have been host to two of best: the 12th
annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at Fashion Island, which took
place last Sunday, and Saturday’s Harbor Heritage Run.
Thousands of people showed up to the races, got a bit of exercise
and at the same time raised money for two valuable causes.
Much of the money raised at the Race for the Cure stays in Orange
County, making what is a good cause into a good, local cause. The
Susan G. Komen Foundation’s efforts to battle breast cancer are a
standard for other charities.
The Harbor Heritage Run, too, is a standard for how to raise money
to make an excellent school even better. Last year’s event raised
$27,000, and hopes heading into it were high for similar numbers to
help teachers with classroom needs, to pay for Grad Night festivities
and to put into scholarships.
Now that the sweating is all over, organizers and participants,
alike, have earned a bit of rest.
