Sailors earn clean dozen

The Newport Harbor High girls field hockey team remained undefeated,
improved their winning streak to 12 and captured the Orange County
Invitational championship at Marina High Saturday.
Senior Jillianne Whitfield earned Most Valuable Player honors, as
she helped lead the Sailors to a 2-0 victory over Santa Ana in the
semifinals and a 1-0 win over Edison in the title game.
Kerri Gates and Tiffany Vandersloot scored for the Sailors in
their win over Santa Ana, while Victoria Swigart, Gates and Whitfield
were credited with assists. Senior goalie Amanda Wittman recorded
three saves.
The Sailors went up 1-0 in the first five minutes against Edison,
when Dana Owad scored after finishing an assist from Ashley Harrison.
Wittman, who had two saves, helped the Sailors complete their 11th
straight shutout.
Owad, Gates, Lauren Curtis and Kristen Jendrusina gained
all-tournament recognition for Newport (12-0).
