Day, Bjelland, Cotton shine for Costa Mesa

Jasmin Day, Christine Bjelland and Emily Cotton went 1-2-3, while

Kyla Flores finished fourth to help the Costa Mesa High girls cross

country team defeat Orange and Ocean View in a Golden West League

tri-meet at Central Park in Huntington Beach Thursday.

Day, a sophomore, running in her first cross country season,

clocked a 19:37 to win, and Bjelland (20:04), Cotton (20:23) and

Flores (20:45) followed for the Mustangs (3-0 in league).

Senior Stacy Krikorian, seventh in 21:39, sophomore Anna

Rodriguez, ninth in 21:44, and Alex Marquez, 10th in 22:02, rounded

out the top 10 for the meet.

The Costa Mesa boys are now 1-2 after splitting Thursday, losing

to Orange, 15-49, but defeating Ocean View, 16-44. senior Marco Huipe

led the Mustangs, finishing seventh in 17:25.

The Mustangs will return to action Oct. 9, playing visitor to

crosstown rival Estancia.

Sea Kings sweep Marina

* VOLLEYBALL: The visiting Corona del Mar High girls volleyball

team defeated Marina, 25-15, 25-12, 25-14, in a nonleague match

Thursday.

Lauren Snell led the Sea Kings with six kills followed by five

each from Lindsey Ensign and Jordan Smith.

Breanne Ogden and Traci Lawson each had six digs to go with solid

play from Britta Nielsen.

CdM sweeps T-wolves

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Corona del Mar High girls cross country team

remained unbeaten in the Pacific Coast League, while the CdM boys

bounced back from a league loss to Laguna Beach last week.

The CdM girls defeated Northwood, 18-45, and the boys topped the

Timberwolves, 18-39, in a league dual meet Thursday at Bonita Creek

Park.

Anne St. Geme won the girls race in 19:01 and fellow Sea King

Kevin Artz topped the boys field in 16:00.

The CdM girls are now 3-0 against PCL competition, while the boys

team is 2-1.

CdM’s Jack Turner (16:27) was second in the boys race and Hilary

May (19:11) was second for CdM in the girls race.

Eagles swept by Saints

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Estancia High girls cross country team had

four girls suffering from leg injuries and three others getting over

the flu Thursday during a Golden West League dual meet with visiting

Santa Ana.

Estancia Coach Charlie Appell said a team at full strength still

would have been hard pressed to defeat Santa Ana, which is 2-0 in

league after a 21-40 victory over the Eagles.

Freshman Janette Abrego had the highest finish for Estancia (2-1),

coming in third (19:54), while freshman Sydney Barloon (20:12)

followed in fourth.

On the boys side, Estancia also lost, 20-39. Senior Matt Zich

(16:41) and junior Alex Cahuantzi (16:47) finished fourth and fifth,

respectively.

Estancia will compete in the Yucaipa Invitational Saturday.

Warriors edge Sailors

* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High seniors Vanessa Dunlap, Bonnie Adams

and Diana Khoury each won two singles sets, but it wasn’t enough to

stave off a 10-8 Sea View League-opening defeat at Woodbridge

Thursday.

The Sailors, who play host to Foothill Tuesday, fell to 3-3.

No. 1 Lightning rolls

* TENNIS: Three Newport Beach residents helped Sage Hill School

handle visiting Oxford Academy, 17-1, in an Academy League girls

tennis match Thursday at Park Newport.

Lightning freshman Sarah Geocaris won all 18 games at No. 1

singles, while the No. 2 doubles tandem of senior Laura Webb and

sophomore Grace Graham won two hard-fought battles en route to a

sweep.

Sage Hill, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division V,

improved to 6-3, 4-0 in league. The Lightning complete the first

round of league play Tuesday at home against Brethren Christian.

Seahawks top Eagles

* GOLF: The defending Golden West League champion proved to be

too much for the Estancia High girls golf team, which lost to

undefeated Ocean View, 251-280, at Meadowlark Golf Course in

Huntington Beach Thursday.

Estancia junior Sarah Lambert shot 48 for the Eagles (1-3, 1-1 in

league), who also featured freshman Lina Yu (49), freshman Bridget

Gleason (54), sophomore Lauren Donner (57) and freshman Josie Flores

(67).

Ocean View improved to 4-0, 2-0.

The Eagles return to action Tuesday, against Orange at Costa Mesa

Golf & Country Club.

Sailors sweep Los Al

* VOLLEYBALL: Newport Harbor High senior Alyson Jennings amassed

12 kills, 18 assists and eight digs to lead the Sailors to a 25-21,

25-16, 25-19, nonleague girls volleyball victory Thursday at Los

Alamitos.

Emily Turner added seven kills and eight digs for the winners, who

received 23 assists from senior Kellie King.

Newport Harbor, which opens Sea View League play Wednesday at

Aliso Niguel, improved to 7-4.

Sea Kings set record

* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High girls golf team broke its

two-day-old, single-round team scoring record by defeating visiting

Laguna Beach, 219-276, in a Pacific Coast League match Thursday at

Newport Beach Country Club.

The previous record was 220, established Tuesday.

CdM sophomore Veronica Friedman was the medalist for the first

time in her varsity career with a personal-best 5-over-par 40.

Katie McKittrick (42), Katie Albright (43), Jonna Kim (46) and

Caitlin McDonald (48) rounded out the scorers for CdM, which improved

to 6-3, 2-0 in league.

CdM plays host to University Tuesday at NBCC in what CdM Coach

Mike Starkweather said is a battle of PCL title contenders.

Mesa rallies past Troy

* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa High boys water polo team overcame a

4-1, first-quarter deficit to defeat nonleague visitor Troy, 13-8,

Thursday.

The Mustangs (7-4) outscored the Warriors, 4-0, in the second

quarter to take a 5-4 halftime lead and then won the second half by

an 8-4 margin.

Sophomore Kyle Thorsness led Mesa with seven goals and senior

Brian Tipton scored three goals.

Also, junior Sergio Hernandez added two and senior Brian Knox

provided one. Junior Matt Jaroslawski recorded eight saves to help

keep Troy winless at 0-5.

Costa Mesa will play Tuesday at 3 p.m., hosting Gahr.

VU extends win streak

* SOCCER: Vanguard University’s women’s soccer team increased its

winning streak to five games with a 1-0 victory over Christian

Heritage on Wednesday in El Cajon.

Vanguard broke a 0-0 tie 10 minutes into the second half on Ashley

DeLoach’s goal and held on for its fifth straight shutout.

Tritons knock off CdM

* WATER POLO: Five first-period ejections, leading to three San

Clemente High goals, helped the Tritons produce an 11-8 nonleague

boys water polo victory over Corona del Mar Thursday at San Clemente.

The Sea Kings (3-7) had two goals apiece from Tom Money and Kyle

Hersh, while goalie Gaston Sanford made 13 saves.

Money also had four steals and two assists for the visitors.
