Marinko Marin Jerkunica

Laguna Beach resident Marinko Marin Jerkunica died Aug. 18. He was

81.

Mr. Jerkunica was born Jan. 15, 1922, in a small fishing village

off the Adriatic Coast.

He was a painter and sculptor before serving in World War II in

Yugoslavia. After the war he studied to be an architect. He landed

his first contract in Paris, where he met and later married actress

Joanna Claire Jones.

The couple moved to Laguna Beach, where Mr. Jerkunica closed many

real estate deals to make his mark on Laguna.

He was remarried to Beverly, who died. He then married Maria.

He is survived by wife Maria; and sons Marco, Anthony, Evan and

Nikolai.

George Sidney Brignell

George Sidney Brignell died July 15 of a heart attack in Lake

Arrowhead. He was 57.

Mr. Brignell was a tree-cutting supervisor for Terra Industries.

He had his own tree-cutting business in Orange County for 30 years.

Mr. Brignell was a native of Laguna Beach. As a teenager, he won

the Laguna Beach surfing contest. In the last 14 years, Mr. Brignell

volunteered with Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and other

rehabilitation groups.

He is survived by his wife, Nyla; and stepdaughters Dawn DeLand

and Lisa DeMent.

John Herbert Halliday Jr.

Born Nov. 25, 1918, in Fort Worth, Texas John Herbert Halliday Jr.

died Aug. 5 in Dana Point of cancer. He was 84.

While a Naval officer in World War II he directed and coordinated

the landing craft launched from his ship at the invasions of Iwo

Jima, Okinawa and other battles in the Pacific. He was sent to

Washington, D.C. just before the atomic bomb was to be dropped

because his computer experience was needed.

It was there he met is wife, Mary, also a Navy officer.

After the war, they moved to California, where Mr. Halliday worked

for Moore Business Forms for 30 years. He was a lifelong member of

Rotary International, serving as president of the San Marino chapter

before moving to Laguna Beach. Their last home was in Dana Point.

Mr. Halliday is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years; and

parents John and Ruth.

He is survived by his son John and daughter-in-law Patricia, of

Glendale; and son Tom of Laguna Beach.

The funeral service is private. Family and friends are invited to

attend a memorial service and reception at 11 a.m. Sept. 6 at the

Laguna Presbyterian Church, 415 Forest Ave. In lieu of flowers, the

family asks donations be made either to the Laguna Presbyterian

Church or to the South Coast Medical Center Foundation, 31872 Coast

Highway, Laguna Beach, CA 92651.

Jean Hall Patterson

Jean Hall Patterson of Monarch Bay died on July 23. She was 78.

She was born in Phoenix in 1924 and attended Mills College in 1941

and 42. She received a bachelor’s from the University of Arizona.

She married John A. Patterson in 1948 and became one of the first

residents of Monarch Bay Terrace in 1963. She worked as a real estate

agent and served on the board of Realtors as president from 1975 to

1976.

Mrs. Patterson is survived by daughter Nancy Eileen Jordan; son

John “Jock” Archibald Patterson III; granddaughter Alyssa Jene

Jordan; sisters Joanne H. Koenig and Julie H. Pinchin; nephews Jed

Gould, Tony H. Chatterton; niece Amy E. Koenig; and grandnephews

Corey and Jake Yacco.

A personal service is planned at sea.
