WHAT HAPPENED:

The City Council approved the construction of water well on Skylab

Drive in northwest Huntington Beach.

WHAT IT MEANS:

A well hole was created in 1995 and test pumped, but surface

improvements were never constructed. This new well, known as Well No.

12, will bring the city to its goal of having a groundwater supply of

23,000 gallons per minute.

The city can now pump 20,000 gallons per minute of groundwater.

Over the last 10 years, two wells were removed from service, and the

pumping capacity of a third was reduced. This new well would add

3,000 gallons per minute to the city, the amount it needs to meet its

objective.

The well is on Boeing property in northwest Huntington Beach.

WHAT THEY SAID:

“Water’s becoming a scarce resource, both now and in the future,

Asst. City Administrator Bill Workman said. This would provide an

additional water source to the city of Huntington Beach.”

WHAT HAPPENED:

Jack Kirkorn will replace Vickie McDonald on the Ascon/NESI Ad-Hoc

Task Force.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The Ascon/NESI Task Force is an advisory board that meets

periodically to discuss issues relating to the Ascon/NESI toxic waste

dump, which is in Southeast Huntington Beach.

Jack Kirkorn, a retired firefighter, was appointed by the

committee’s City Council liaisons, Dave Sullivan and Jill Hardy. The

committee meets on an as-needed basis. The duties of its members are

to advise the council on issues related to the toxic dump site.

There is no term limit for members since the committee is not a

formal board or commission.

WHAT HAPPENED:

Councilwoman Cathy Green announced that the Council on Aging will

pay for new carpeting in the Roger’s Senior Center and for a

part-time social worker position that was eliminated in the city

budget cuts.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The new carpeting, which will be laid down next week, will replace

carpeting that is very old and soiled. The city is unable to provide

these kinds of improvements to the Roger’s Senior Center now because

of budget restrictions.

Green also announced that the group will subsidize for one year a

part-time worker at the Roger’s Senior Center who would have

otherwise been laid off as a result of budget cuts.

The Council on Aging raises funds through an annual golf

tournament held in June and the Senior Saturday Community Festival,

scheduled this year to be held Sept. 13 at Huntington Beach Pier

Plaza.
