Council is right to reconsider Poseidon

I am strongly opposed to the Poseidon desalinization plant that

has been proposed off the coast here in Huntington Beach. I do not

think it will be a benefit to the city or the environment and I am

glad the City Council is reconsidering it.

Report shouldn’t have passed

Poseidon’s environmental report should not have passed. The

Planning Commission knows that the [report] is flawed, but they

passed the buck to the other certifying agencies rather than doing

their job. Something is off!

City wastes money on wrong things

I want to respond to Cindy Klavy’s letter (“The use of police

helicopters is overkill,” Aug. 7) in reference to cutting back on the

overuse of police helicopters.

I also think they cause so much noise, chaos and a hefty financial

price tag. Why do we spend such an astronomical amount of money on

them? What gets me is the real priorities in this town. We blow money

away on helicopters, but when we take down lots of trees, like some

of the beauties that were in Lake Street Park or lined Lake Street,

we do not replace them. What is up with that? We could pay someone to

take down a so-called diseased tree, but no one could find any money

to replant/replace any of those trees?

KOCE should stay in Orange County

KOCE should remain local. If it does not stay local, I will not

renew my membership. Nor will I send in money for the fundraisers.

KOCE must not go to religious group

Under no circumstances should KOCE be sold to any religious

organization. Churches are now big business. Their preachers tell

their folks how to vote. Religious influence is everywhere -- on

school boards, on city councils. Religious fundamentalists are now

running the country into the ground and stirring up hatred for

America all over the world.

At one time, churches did not meddle in politics. Now they decide

elections. KOCE should be sold to an independent group. They give us

local and world news and quality programming and not be tied to any

mass media. Programming should be similar to World Link and BBC

Air Force justified in Boeing case

I would say yes, the air force justified in pulling the contract

from Boeing. I worked in aerospace for 20 years, most recently at

Boeing. And I can tell you from personal experience, it’s not really

the fault of those engineers, it is gross, absolutely gross

mismanagement of that company. It is just absolutely horrible, it’s

stupid beyond belief what they do. They just make horrible decisions.

I could go on and on. I think they were justified in pulling the

contract, but not because of the engineers. It’s because of poor

management, very poor management.

Hearthside should sell to the state

Hearthside Homes should definitely accept a state offer to buy the

Bolsa Chica. Hearthside has said for years they’d sell, but where was

the money? Now, they have a legitimate offer of the money from a

qualified buyer, the state. Three reasons why Hearthside should sell:

Hearthside has no water, it is waiting for approval for their project

and at the present time have no environmental impact report no local

coastal plan and the surrounding communities don’t want the Bolsa

Chica developed. The time to sell is now.

Coerper’s vote on taxes telling

It is interesting to note that former city police officer Gil

Coerper voted against the court and taxpayers and for an illegal tax

that feeds the pension fund for retired city employees, in that

Coerper is a retiree and gains from his negative vote demonstrates

that for politicians, all things are self serving.

Taxpayers better off forgetting the refund

Taxpayers receiving the refund will end up paying for it equal to

the amount of bonds sold by the city. In addition, interest will also

be paid. It appears taxpayers are better off foregoing receiving the

tax refund thus avoiding additional taxes and interest.

Disaster looming on state and local level

Let me get this straight: All my detractors (they know who they

are) are clamoring to short-circuit the electoral process on the

local and state levels by supporting the districting initiative and

the recall effort.

Their primary motivation, let’s be honest, is to get rid of the

perceived “special interests” that have come to power (especially the

environmentalists) and replace them with the “special interests” that

formerly were in power (especially the developers).

These are the wonderful folks who also tried to short-circuit the

electoral process on the national level a while back with the

impeachment of the president.

All of the politicians these folks are going after were elected

(and sometimes re-elected) by a majority of the voters. Instead of

playing by the rules to win, they have to change the rules to

prevail. This is democracy in action?

I guess these wonderful folks are scared of the power of the

people and will do whatever they can to overturn popular will. Just a

note to all these would-be electrical engineers. Normally when you

short-circuit a system you make it worse!

Polkow should walk through wetlands

On behalf of the “groupies and the cronies” that Bob Polkow

mentioned in his Aug. 14 letter, against the purchase of the Bolsa

Chica Mesa and chastising Assemblyman Tom Harman’s vote, I would like

to recommend Polkow take a walk through the wetland area and

appreciate the beauty of the birds and animals in the tranquil

setting in one of the few places we have left in Orange County for

everyone including the children and future children of tomorrow.

The main reason the lower half cannot be developed is because it

is a habitat for large birds.

Wouldn’t it be just and fitting leaving this beautiful area to our

decedents? After all this is what the people in Orange County have

been fighting for the past 28 years.
