Concert will mark new sports park’s opening

Rockit Scientists will present a free Concert in the Park on

Sunday to kick off the opening of the new Bonita Canyon Sports Park.

The band is known for renditions of classic rock tunes from the

1950s and ‘60s, including numbers made popular by Elvis Presley,

Chuck Berry, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

The performance is being sponsored by the Newport Beach City Arts

Commission, supported in part by a donation by the Newport Beach Arts

Foundation. Festivities will begin at 3 p.m. and will include sports

clinics, contests and door prizes throughout the day.

The park is along Bonita Canyon Road from Prairie Road to

MacArthur Boulevard. Information: Call (949) 644 3211, code 2156.

UCI summer enrollment a record

UC Irvine had a record 11,109 students take credit courses this

summer, a university spokesman said.

School officials attributed the high number of students, which was

1,726 more than in 2002, to rising tuition costs.

“With tuition going up 30%, students are looking to finish college

more quickly,” UCI spokesman Tom Vasich said. “They go to summer

classes to accelerate their credits.”

The UC system has raised its fees to offset the state’s budget

gap, Vasich said.

Passenger traffic rises 9.3% at JWA

Airline passenger traffic at John Wayne Airport has increased by

9.3% in July from the same time last year.

Commercial carrier flight operations, however, decreased by 3%,

while air taxi operations rose by 31.2%.
