Newport voted top academic squad

Success has followed the Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team the
past two years, not only on the court, but in the classroom, as well.
For the second straight year, Newport, Sea View League champion
the last two seasons, was named the top boys volleyball team, based
on cumulative grade point average, as part of the CIF Southern
Section Academic Awards program.
Coach Dan Glenn’s Sailors won the award for the large schools
division, which include 1,500 or more students. The Newport team’s
average was 3.371.
The team awards were awarded in 23 sports. To be considered, teams
must have accomplished a minimum 3.0 GPA. The Anaheim Angels sponsor
the Academic Awards program and the winners are honored in a pregame
ceremony at an Angels game.
The Sailors were co-champions of the Sea View League last season
and outright champions the year before. The members of last season’s
team were: Nick Glassic, Ryan Newell, Nick Kelly, Morgan Govaars,
Adam Schlesinger, Paul Toman, Michael Toole, Mike McDonald, Jon
Langford, Jamie Diefenbach and Brett Perrine.
