Harbor Mesa Lions working in the park

Harbor Mesa Lions assisted the Costa Mesa Friends of Fairview Park at
their annual fund-raiser held in Fairview Park. Members sold 50/50
raffle tickets and kites to raise funds for the park. The club also
helped with the CostAmazing event held July 10 by ushering for the
concert and serving refreshments. The event celebrated the city’s
50th anniversary at the Pacific Amphitheatre.
“The club is dedicated to help with community events like these
and will continue to serve when given the opportunity,” said Joan
Parks, Harbor Mesa Lions president.
Harbor Mesa Lions Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Costa
Mesa Country Club. Featured speaker will be Kim Woods of the Friends
of Fairview Park.
SONS OF VETERANS
Maybe you are not a veteran of the Armed Services, but if one of
your parents was, you are invited to attend the next meeting of the
Sons of the American Legion Squadron 291 of Newport Beach at 7 p.m.
Wednesday at American Legion Post 291 on the Balboa Peninsula. All
sons of veterans are welcome to attend. Membership questions may be

LOOKING FOR A
FEW NEW MEMBERS
The Toastmasters Club 231F, which meets at 7 a.m. every Monday at
the Irvine Co., 610 Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach, is looking
for a few new members who wish to improve their public speaking
ability, longtime member Bob Wood said.
“One should not be afraid of joining Toastmasters, all of us
started as inexperience speakers and have grown quite a bit as a
result of Toastmaster membership,” Wood said. For more information
please call: (949) 721-5732.
VACATION TIME
As you read today’s column, I am on a five-day visit in
Minneapolis to my brother LeRoy.
A couple of weekends ago, I went with my wife, Barbara, to the
United States Chamber of Commerce Executive’s Leadership Forum held
in Naples, Fla. Barbara was one of 14 speakers on a list that
included Commerce Secretary Don Evans, former Speaker of the House of
Representatives Newt Gingrich and former Rep. John Kasich.
It was a role reversal weekend for us, with Barbara as the speaker
and me as the spouse. Barbara, by the way, did a very good job on her
presentation on “Chambers and Governmental Affairs.” Staying at the
Ritz Carlton made it a little easier to accept the 92-degree
temperature, 95% humidity and 89-degree water temperature.
Today in Minneapolis, LeRoy and I are trying to catch up to Tim de
Boom, his wife, Nicole, and brother Tony, all professional
triathletes competing today in the City of Lakes. Ah, de Booms with
athletic ability!
