Good works and fun on horizon

EYE ON ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

The forecast in Laguna: warm, muggy, still beautiful and plenty to

keep your mind off the heat. Woody’s is hosting “Tie-One-On” for the

benefit of the needy artist, Hawaiian fun joins the Festival of the

Arts and music in the park is sure to put a few smiles on some faces.

MORE FUN FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Tuesday night the action was at Woody’s at the Beach for yet

another good cause. It seems that their philanthropist endeavors are

a weekly happening. Well, the guys at Woody’s are very giving and

caring to our community. Owner Joel Herzer and marketing director

Alford Harrison deserve many thanks. Tuesday’s event was a kick off

party for the Festival of Arts “Tie-One-On” benefit which will be

from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 16 at the festival. Woody’s event was a

preview of some of the ties that will be auctioned at the event with

funds going to local artists in need.

Participating artists get a blank tie that they design as they

wish and donate it to be auctioned. Last year’s event resulted in

some truly creative ties. Artist Tim Shockley gets my vote for the

most original -- his was transformed into a snake and he put it in a

cage. The snake was held up with wire inside him, making it look like

he was ready to strike at any minute. Julita Jones’ tie was on the

cute side of art with giraffe’s and other animals.

Last year Mike Tauber did a fabulous job of facilitating the live

auction. This year the witty Pat Kollenda will join him. The two of

them together should really be a treat.

Yes, it’s another event started by Anne England to help out

artists.

“This is the third year,” England said. “Last year we raised

$10,000. The goal for this year is $40,000. People will be modeling

the ties in costume. It’s a wonderful way to get beautiful original

art at an affordable price.”

Prices are as low as $50. England promised that it would be a fun

day with food and wine and great art and entertainment. She

guesstimated that 120 artists will donate their work.

ALOHA

Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Festival of Arts is another

special event, “Hawaiian Cultural Day.” Marketing and Public

Relations Director for the Festival of Arts and Pageant of the

Masters Sharbie Higuchi is really looking forward to this year’s

event. The event brings a little bit of the Hawaiian Islands to

Laguna. Fine art, hands-on-crafts, music and other Hawaiian

traditions and culture will be demonstrated. Joe Aki and the Poi

Pounders will be providing the sounds of Hawaiian music and they will

have hula dancing. The Festival of Arts is located at 650 Laguna

Canyon Road. Laguna Beach residents always get free admission. For

information, call 494-1145.

LAST CHANCE TO

SEE GREAT TALENT

Sunday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. is the third and final performance

for Karen Maria Schleifer. Everyone who has seen her perform has

applauded her music. Her touching vocals and style are exuded through

her one-of-a-kind voice. Many have said that she will make it big.

Let’s hope so. She just released her first CD titled “Only the

Ocean,” which she will have on sale at the Sawdust. The Sawdust Art

Festival is located 935 Laguna Canyon Road. For information, call

494-3030.

CONCERT IN THE PARK

Before or after seeing the Karen Maria Schleifer gig, it is a must

to enjoy the free concert at Bluebird Park.

An annual favorite, Chico will be performing their Latin sounds,

getting everyone to dance and have a good time. The concert in the

park is so much fun. It’s from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday and there are

different musicians performing every week. Bring your blanket; picnic

basket, beverages, friends and family ad enjoy the music, socializing

and atmosphere.

Bluebird Park is located at Cress Street ad Bluebird Canyon Drive.

For information, call 497-0716. As much as I would like to bring my

German shepherd puppy, Reef, dogs aren’t allowed. Which is

understandable because it gets very crowded -- so it’s best for your

dog that no dogs are allowed.
