Woody’s at the Beach hosted the first of two events in Laguna Beach
to celebrate breast cancer survival. “One in Eight” featured art,
food and wine with proceeds benefiting the Orange County Affiliate of
the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
“One in Eight” has the goal of bringing awareness to the national
statistic of breast cancer diagnosis within a woman’s lifetime.
Tuesday’s $75 a person gourmet four-course dinner was touted as a
success. .
“It was sold out, it was great,” said Alford Harrison, Woody’s
marketing director and event coordinator. “We netted over $12,500,
the year before was $8,500 and our goal was $10,000.”
Artist and art commissioner Mike Tauber was the auctioneer with 13
pieces being auctioned to raise proceeds.
“Last night was a spectacular event because of all the people that
were there,” Tauber said. “It was a great group of supportive people,
an atmosphere of compassion.”
He said the food, art and people were all spectacular.
“The businesses really came forward with all their generosity,”
Tauber said. “I’m grateful to all the people who came to purchase and
made my job easy as the auctioneer.”
The second event will be at Marion Meyer Contemporary Art from 7
to 9 p.m. July 22 and will include the “Survivor Art Exhibition” and
“Artist Reception.” The work was done by those who continue to
survivor cancer. It’s designed to celebrate the feeling of
empowerment, expression and healing power that creativity through art
can bring. The process of creating art has been cathartic to many
cancer survivors who use art as a tool to help them heal while
dealing with their disease.
The public is invited to the event to enjoy the art and meet the
artists. Donations are welcome at the door, wine and hors d’oeuvres
will be served. Marion Meyer Contemporary Art Gallery is at 354 N.
Coast Highway. For information, call 497-5442.
