While three of the four Newport-Mesa School District boys basketball
teams are competing in the George Yardley Cage Classic at Newport
Harbor High, Costa Mesa High continues its successful summer campaign
in the Summer Cage Classic at Servite High, beginning today.
Coach Bob Serven’s Mustangs had compiled a 19-4 summer record
through July 6, including an 11-1 mark at a tournament at Gonzaga
University.
Mesa, led by returning starters Brian Molina, Scott Knox, Jeff
Waldron and Marko Stankovic, won three of its four games at both the
Mater Dei tournament and at a UCI team camp, Serven said.
“Knox has done a good job from the perimeter and Waldron has been
outstanding,” said Serven, who also singled out Tony Krikorian,
Brandon Aleson and Duaine Wase as key contributors.
The Mustangs open the Servite tournament today at 4:30 p.m.
against Loara at the Servite gym. The tournament, which holds some
first-round and consolation games at Anaheim High, continues Saturday
and Sunday.
