Mustang Major All-Stars win tourney
The Fountain Valley Youth Baseball Mustang Major All-Star team,
consisting of several players from Huntington Beach, walloped East
Long Beach, 13-3, to capture their division championship at the Los
Alamitos Tournament.
East Long Beach actually led, 3-1, heading into the bottom of the
third inning but over the course of the next three innings, Fountain
Valley produced 12 runs to break the game open.
The offense was led by Justin DeValk with a double and triple,
Kyle Frame with a double and single, Nathan Orozco and Josh Martinez
each with two singles and Mitchell Alvarez and Cash Duarte each with
a single.
DeValk and Alvarez combined to three-hit East Long Beach.
The game was called in the bottom of the fifth by the 10-run mercy
rule.
The Mustang Major All-Stars, comprised of players 9 and 10 years
old, captured first place in their pool play bracket with a 4-0-1
record.
Following pool play, the team took on Placentia and trailed, 8-6,
heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Frame began the comeback by singling up the middle. He stole
second and advanced to third. Nick Sterrenburg the walked and stole
second and Derek Peters was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Orozco the delivered a two-run double to left field to tie the
game at 8-8. That set the stage for Cody Schneekluth who singled to
right-centerfield on a 3-2 count to drive home the winning run.
The All-Star team, which also consists of players Kyle Bertram,
Chip Chapella, Nick Gorman and Jonathan Torres, Manager Jim
Roumeliotis and coaches Gene Bolton, Hector Duarte and Bob Torres,
next will compete at the upcoming District tournament in Westminster.
