Seaview Pirates dominate
Mike Sciacca
The juggernaut that is the Seaview Pirates just keeps going.
The Pirates completed a 25-0 season by winning the District 62
Tournament of Champions Minor A Division title by downing their
Seaview rival, the Yankees, 4-1, in a final hosted by Huntington
Valley Little League at Wardlow Park.
With 21 regular season triumphs this season, paired with 20 in
each of the past two seasons, the Pirates have run their three-year
regular season win streak to an amazing 61 games.
They defeated four postseason tournament opponents to up this
season’s streak to 25 games en route to the district title.
Two Pirates -- pitcher Drew Daley and second baseman Lauren
Czerniachowski, daughter of coach Mike Czerniachowski -- have been a
part of all 61 victories.
Three others - catcher Nick Pedavilla, first baseman Jay Rowerdink
and third baseman Jordan Bender - have been part of the 41 wins the
past two seasons.
Other members of the Pirates include pitcher/centerfielder Matt
Schwab, outfielder/leadoff hitter Ryan Bliele who had a .692 on-base
average, right fielder Alexander Barone, shortstop/pitcher Charlie
Miller, left fielder Ben Allen, centerfielder Scot Bearss and third
baseman/left fielder Scott Orel.
“There are really two outstanding features about this team,” Mike
Czerniachowski said. “First, they understand the concept of teamwork.
They know how to play as a team. They get along with each other and
cheer each other on.
“Second, they understand the fundamentals of baseball. They’re a
sharp group.”
Against the Seaview Yankees, Daley pitched the first five innings
before Miller threw relief in the sixth.
Daley came up with seven strikeouts, walked three and gave up five
hits while Miller had one strikeout with two hits.
It was Miller, too, who put the Pirates on the board in the first
inning as his double knocked in Bliele who had singled.
Miller went on to record two doubles.
In four tournament games, Miller, the Pirates’ cleanup hitter, had
11 at-bats and reached base safely in all 11 attempts.
In the Pirates fourth, Rowerdink delivered a two-run double. In
the sixth, he produced an RBI double.
Overall, Rowerdink finished with three RBI and a pair of hits.
Lauren Czerniachowski, Daley and Miller will represent the Pirates
on Seaview’s 9/10 All-Star team that will compete Monday in the
District 62 All-Star tournament.
The Seaview All-Stars will be managed by Mike Czerniachowski.
