Newport team advances

With the score tied, 2-2, Newport AAA Tournament team plated three

runs in the fourth inning, enough to secure a 5-4 triumph over Laguna

Niguel in the first round of the District 55 tournament Saturday.

Sam Cubiero singled to start the rally and with two outs, Brent

Lawson walked and Cubiero later scored on Cort Hastings’ hit that was

misplayed by the first baseman. J.D. Dawn drove in Lawson with a

single to left and Austin Jones followed with another single to plate

Hastings.

Brennan Anderson added a single in the fifth for Newport, which

plays today against South Mission Viejo at Aliso Elementary.

Cubiero struck out five and allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Sandon Griffin pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Graeme Fraser walked with the bases loaded to score Dawn after

successive walks to Andrew Machoskie and Austin Blodgett to stake

Newport to an early lead. Zach Murtaugh added solid defense for the

victors.
