Newport wins Fullerton tourney
Carolyn Conway scored four goals and Anne Belden added two to lead
the Newport Harbor water polo club team to a 9-8 victory over
Coronado in the final of the Fullerton College Open tournament last
weekend.
Conway will be a senior and Belden will be a junior at Newport
Harbor High in the fall.
Playing against open club and college level teams, the Newport
club team, which features several Newport Harbor High varsity team
members, used speed and defense to surge past the opposition and win
the tournament title.
Newport defeated Troy, 14-2, crushed Santa Clarita, 16-3, and
edged past North Shore, 8-7 to reach the final against Coronado.
In the title game, Newport outshot Coronado, 22-14, with Jessica Ball, Katie Erickson and Melissa Wheeler scoring one goal each. Ball
and Erickson will be seniors for the Sailors, while Wheeler will be a
junior in the fall.
Belden, Ball and Terin Cottam recorded two assists each, while
Erickson and Leah Robertson also contributed assists. Newport led,
6-4, at halftime. Cottam, Newport’s goalie who will be a senior,
stopped three shots.
Jocelyn Manderino, a former Newport Harbor High standout, coached
the Newport club team while Coach Bill Barnett was in Europe as
assistant coach for the U.S. men’s World Cup team.
