Local trio moves on to semis

All three seeded players from Newport-Mesa advanced to the semifinals
of their respective age divisions Friday at the 101st annual Southern
California Tennis Association junior sectional championships.
Top-seeded Costa Mesa resident Nelly Radeva cruised by
eighth-seeded Catherine Isip, 6-2, 6-2, and will face Indio’s Pamela
Montez in a girls 12s singles division semifinal today at 2 p.m. at
Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley. If Radeva wins, she
would play in the final Sunday at Los Cab at 9 a.m.
Newport Beach’s Jake Fleming, the third seed in boys 14s, defeated
Mark Martinez, 6-1, 6-3 and will face second-seeded Steven Forman
from Del Mar today at 2 p.m. at Los Cab. The boys 14s final is
scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday.
Sixth-seeded Carsten Ball upset third-seed Stefan Hardy of Santa
Maria, 6-4, 6-2, in boys 16s action and will face Los Angeles’ Mike
Guzman today at 11 a.m. at Los Cab. Sunday’s final is scheduled for
10:30 a.m.
Two area players are still alive in the consolation brackets of
their age division after Friday.
Newport Beach’s Kaes Van’t Hof defeated Encinitas’ John Caldwell,
6-4 6-3, to advance to a boys 18s quarterfinal against Irvine’s Adam
Loucks at 9:30 a.m. at Los Cab. If Van’t Hof wins, he would play in a
semifinal later today at 12:30 p.m. while Alvarado would play again
at 2 p.m. if he defeats Nguyen.
Costa Mesa’s Charlie Alvarado needed three sets to post a 6-2,
4-6, 6-1 victory in the boys 12s consolation bracket. Alvarado, the
eighth seed, will face Anaheim’s Denis Nguyen in a quarterfinal today
at 11 a.m. at the Neal Machander Tennis Center in Santa Ana.
Brittany Holland, in the third round of the girls 18s consolation
bracket, and Ryan Caughren in the same round in boys 14s, lost their
matches Friday. Holland lost to Kristen McVitty of Woodland Hills,
7-5, 6-3, while Caughren fell to Christian Isip, 6-3, 5-7, 2-6.
