Walkin’ around the clock for a good cause

The weather is right on cue.

The Relay for Life is set for Saturday at the Laguna Beach High

School football field and hopefully the sun will hold strong until

it’s over.

The relay is a prime fund-raising method for the American Cancer

Society. Teams sign up to walk around a track for 24 hours earning

money for the charity as they go.

Not only is it an opportunity to get out with the community and

raise funds for cancer research, the event provides a time and place

for friends and family to remember those they’ve lost and do what

they can to help cancer research. A luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m.

gives families a chance to honor lost loved ones and survivors.

There are more than 25 teams already signed up to put their feet

to work, but there’s room for more. You don’t need to sign up ahead

of time, you can just head out to the high school and join the

effort. Teams will walk all night, which often results in midnight

(and beyond) gatherings of teammates and individuals.

How many reasons do you need? Raising funds for the fight against

cancer, giving time in remembrance of a loved one or just spending a

night of fun with your neighbors -- whatever the incentive, your feet

are welcome.
