The Rockies rebounded from an early lead by the Padres to win the
Costa Mesa National Little League’s farm division championship, 14-7,
June 14.
Jesse Paz led the Rockies with four doubles, while leadoff hitter
Garrett Henscheld had four hits in six innings. After the Padres took
the early lead on hits by Brian and Patrick Cromwell, the Rockies
responded with solid defensive plays from Chayse Shulman and Paz.
Eric Rasmussen called a solid game behind the plate for the
Rockies and also tallied three singles. Hits by Aaron Wood and Al
Mazur helped the Rockies pull away. Garrett Kahre, Adam Ditt and
Armando Trujillo added to the offense.
The defense also shined, especially second baseman Matt Spicer.
With a man on first and the Padres threatening, Spicer moved to his
right to snag a groundball, tagged the runner and threw to first for
the double play.
In the farm division coaches’ invitational game June 14:
* The Dodgers’ Robert Sullivan had a grand slam along with two
other hits while the Rockies’ Paz, the Diamondbacks Cole Mensinger
and the Dodgers’ Kylee Stone also went 3 for 3.
The Astros’ Kyle Barnett and the Rockies’ Shulman each had two
hits along with a triple by the Rockies’ Wood. Dodger Ben Beck drove
in Wood.
The defenses shined as Astro Royce Friedman and Dodger Dezmond
Lewis each played solid while the Padres’ catcher Patrick Cromwell
made two putouts at home. Cromwell’s teammate, Brian Jolivette,
played a strong third base and the Marlins’ Sergio Valenzuela was
solid at shortstop.
The Giants’ Cody Stoddard and the Mets’ Jake Stone and Chad
Fackler each hit home runs.
