With a clearance of 5 feet, 10 inches, the same height she won her
second straight CIF State title in the girls high jump two weeks ago,
Costa Mesa High graduate Sharon Day finished runner-up to Georgia
Tech’s Chaunte Howard at the USA Junior Outdoor track and field
championships Saturday at Stanford University.
Howard, a CIF State title holder in the event as well, soared 5-11
1/4 to earn the victory.
Day, who graduated Thursday, competed in the senior nationals
Sunday, but did not advance to the finals. With her jump Saturday,
Day qualified for the United States junior national team that will
compete at the Pan American Games in August, her father, Eugene,
said.
